Default Hawkeye front suspension knocking/rattle

Hi

I have a rattle developing on my F/O/S suspension which is not consistent but when at its worst it sounds as if something is about to drop off. I have had it checked out by local dealer and nothing can be found apart from some slightly loose joints on my A/R bar drop links. I can’t feel the effects of the rattle.

I’m pretty certain it is strut related owing to the “depth” of the rattle.
Has anyone experienced a drop link rattle – what does it sound like? Does anyone have a suggestion?

Some background - I have had the AST Stage 3 T25 setup with regard to the A/R bar (not sure if that affects the drop links) but have since had BC struts installed last year and the guarantee is due to expire in 1 month’s time.

Problem is the installer is 200 mile round trip and a day out of my schedule so if its something simple I would prefer to have it fixed locally but if its the strut knocking then I would prefer to get it fixed under guarantee.

Drop link noise is usually more clunky. Rattle suggests lighter in tone. BC's, as with alot of coilovers, need frequent service, alot more than a strut/damper combo

Solved….

With the local dealer not finding what is a very prominent rattle along with a ray of sunshine last weekend I started investigating it myself.

Didn’t take long to find the problem nor did it take a rocket scientist. Quite simply, it was the top ball joint mount of the strut rattling and all it took was to jack the car up to remove the load off the wheel and jiggle the wheel up and down with a long bar. Didn’t even need to remove the wheel as it turns out.

Yesterday, I took a video of the top mount, which is jiggling up and down so much it is almost pornographic, back to the dealer in a failed attempt to claim my money back – they weren’t interested and kept referring to the slightly loose drop links and slightly worn bushes on the a/r bar which they seemed very pleased that they had found and so justified the work.

Obviously main dealers don’t have long bars but, with the Ł62 they charged me NOT to find the rattle, despite me pointing them to the strut, they should now be able to afford one!! So Bell & Colvill, treat yourself to a long bar should anyone else come in to investigate a suspension rattle.

…and, to those who refer to dealers as stealers, I have just joined the ranks with regard to B&C. It’s not as if this is the first time I‘ve had problems with them. They refused to service my 99 WRX import despite checking with them before buying it that it would be OK, they refused to sell me an exhaust section for said import and they charged me Ł200 last year NOT to find my head gasket problem again, after pointing them in the right direction.

Come back Cheam Motors.

Back to API now to get the top mount replaced with David being as helpful as ever. If only they were closer.

Oh, and by the way, apparently, there are no common suspension issues with STis nor do Hawkeyes suffer from head gasket failure.

Bellend Colvill

"loose drop links and slightly worn bushes on the a/r bar".... if ever there was a more vague diagnosis on which to write out an invoice.

It seems clear from the video that the top nut is loose. The pillowball is not moving with the damper rod up and down within its housing, its just the the damper rod moving up and down independently to the joint. Tighten the top centre nut, 2 minutes work and problem eradicated.

Who told you the pillowball was worn and how did you source a replacement?

If anyone else has an issue with their BC Racing units then come to us first for advise, we might well save you a headache and money. Id much rather spend the time helping our customers out than get a bad name through misdiagnosis. It doesnt matter if the kit came from us or one of our dealers, as long as we supplied it originally then we are here to help.

Hi Bren

Nobody “told” me the pillowball was worn – it was my assumption based on seeing the top moving combined with the fact that if B&C couldn’t find the problem then it must be something internal. It didn’t occur to me it could be as simple as a loose nut!

It was only after the top mount was removed back at API that nothing could be found wrong with it and so I looked at the video again and realised, as you have indicated, what the actual problem was. Doh!

I didn’t realise all BC units came through you guys. How much would a replacement rear n/s top mount be please? I have the comfort setup with the weaker springs if it makes any difference.

It’s not critical at the moment as the knocking is slight and intermittent, dependent upon the type of bump, but I’m convinced it is the same as when the rear o/s went which, I’m told, was the rubber unit disintegrating.

What is incorrect David?

There is no cost for the rear top mount. We had a small batch of faulty OEM style mounts come through on kits we ordered around May last year. We didnt at first realise what the issue was hence you presumably having been supplied one replacement. Once we realised that there was a faulty batch we automatically then replaced both mounts on any reported fault to eradicate the (slight) potential of the other side also subsequently failing.

The kits have a 12 month warranty but we dont shy away from doing the right thing, irrespective of when the kit was purchased. Just PM me your name, car spec and kit spec (comfort being 5/4?) and we will get a new mount out to you.
