Default Couple of questions RE: changing shocks (non-Subaru)

Sorry to be asking on here regarding a non _ Subaru, but I'm assuming most struts are of the same principle.

Right... I have a 2002 Clio DCi, and intend on changing both front shocks and top mounts. Now, removing the struts from the car should be no problem, just a case of undoing a few bolts. The problem I have is I don't know how to undo the main top nut, (the one on the top of the shock whatever that's called) When I have tried this in the past the shock just spins along with the nut, this is about the time I run them down the the local mechanics to do.

From what I gather this should be a simple job, once you know how so I would appreciate if someone could help me out here, and yes I know I need to compress the springs before taking it off.

I use my battery powered impact gun to remove them then use spanner to nip the new ones up, works everytime for me. If you do struggle and the shockers are scrap you can grip them with large mole grips in-between the spring but not if they are to be refitted.
