hi all, im wanting to change the suspension on my 99 classic uk spec as couple shocks are leaking!
could i fit sti suspension and would it lower it?if so how much and is the sti suspension harder?
i have seen these on ebay (dont know how to do a proper link!)

Ok, anyone considering upgrading the suspension on a classic, needs to be very clear about what they are trying to achieve: fast road car or track biased car. For fast road, you want to retain as much of the original set up's bump absorption as possible (we have ****e roads in the UK -lets face it). I would consider going for a std set up/P1 set up with uprated ARBs and bushes and see how you get on with that.
If you want something a bit more focused then it's time to consider coilovers, but you need to be aware that even the ones marketed as being "soft" are significantly firmer than a std UK non-Sti set up.....if you're already on an STi set up, the difference will probably feel negligible in terms of ride quality (the coilovers may even be better)! Coilovers make the town ride more fussy (for want of a better term) and can also make the motorway ride more choppy over bad sections.
The payoff is an "on rails" feeling and significantly improved grip and handling!
Like I said, from people used to an STi ride, quality coilovers e.g. Exe-tc, Eibach, Tein Superstreet probably won't feel like much of a step down in terms of ride quality, but someone coming from a relatively soft UK car set up, might get a shock.
I would certainly go no firmer than one of the above set ups for a car predominantly used on the road. I would also stick clear of solid top mounts, rubber ones do help with NVH and there isn't really a noticable compromise in handling!
Firmer does not equal better Impreza for the road, especially a classic which is a light car and doesn't need hefty springs to keep the body in check!
Try and get a ride in a car with the set up you're considering over roads representative of the ones you drive on before commiting would be my main advice!
Hope that helps

like you say our roads are crap so i dont want nothing to hard, but i want a upgrade from my uk suspension, and also want to lower it slightly which im told the sti or p1 sispension will do!

Looks like there may be a bidding war on the next set of P1/STi suspention that comes up for grabs next.
Thanks New_Scoob for the advice there was most helpful to not just my self but everyone that has read this thread thinking of doing the same mod.

I'd go for the P1 struts and springs. They're desinged to work together optimally by Prodrive and the P1 received much praise for it's ride/handling balance.
