Default Repacking struts - argh

Does anyone know why i'm having difficulty removing the 14mm nut from the bottom of the lower strut? (see pic)

I've got hold of the complete strut so nothing else can spin around but the nut just spins and isn't moving down the bolt .

The picture above isn't of my shock, its just the picture off the how to guide.

I have used lots of wd40.

I think i will try removing a nut off another shock today and see if i get the same problem.
At least I will know if the problem is common, in which case its probably me not doing something right.

The piston has a flat on it,this is keyed into the red part of the strut body.
If the whole thing is turning, ie nut and piston together you are stuffed!
The only way to get this undone will be
try an airgun on the nut,
split the nut,
cut off the nut.
be aware if you trash the nut you will need a fine thread metric nut not a std thread.
This happend to me as well, the piston spun and rounded off the flat keyway in the strut bottom. The only way I could get it undone was to chisel the nut off and get another nut to re-assemble.

Are you trying to grease the struts then? that's the only reason you would want to undo this nut.

Yes i am trying to re-grease the struts.

If the whole thing is turning, ie nut and piston together you are stuffed!

Oh well new struts it is then, can't stand the knocking any more i'm getting when driving.

I must say that in my limited experience re-greasing an already knocking strut is a hopeless task cos the bushes are worn and the damage is done. Change the lot out for new or coiloverss asap is the only real permanent fix.
