Default Clunking noise from rear of 2004 STI

Hi, My car has recently developed a knocking sound from the rear. It started on the passenger side but now seems to be coming from both sides, i guess it is the dreaded sticky shocks problem.

I am thinking of fitting coilovers, any recommendations for a road car with the occasional track day?

Thanks
Harry

I used to have AST's on my WRX and they were awesome. Many fit them and leave them on whatever the installer recommends after a bit of a tinker, but I used to vary mine daily to suit whatever driving I was doing. Around town I used the softest settings (1 or 2 out of 12) for comfort, a wet weather spirited run would get them up to 4 or 5, and dry weather up to 6 or 7. On a twisty track 7 or 8 would be good, but any harder it got twitchy. I never went on a good flowing track like Oulton to see what it was like above 9, but that's the only environment I could see such stiffness being suitable. A mate who had Tein's said even the softest setting on those was back-breaking.

Default knocking shocks

Hi Harry, same problem on my 05 STi, read somewhere on here that if jack car up and put a coat of grease mixed with engine oil on shock shaft it will
get rid of sticking/clunking shaft, done mine this week and seems to of worked
but dont know how long will last, should get rid of noise till you make up your mind what suspension you choose to replace with, also looking at AST 2s from powerstation and full geo with lift kit in near future for mine to, hope this helps.

You need to strip the strut down and regrease, its not a guarenteed fix, but for an hour and £5 its worth a shot IMHO!

A temporary fix that lasts approx. 4-6 weeks on mine. Jack the rear up and lift the dirt guard on the shock (inside the spring) and spray the shock with wd40/grease.

I've just fitted BC coilovers which i bought from Bren@apex see the group buy section. I must say they are fantastic quality and the ride and handling now is just amazing (i fitted other suspension bits as well though)

No, the WRX stuts cannot be disasembled in the same way as they are conventional and not inverted like the STI ones.

If so I stand corrected, but the ones I have seen that were meant to be 2006 were conventional, bearing in mind that the 2005 on STi units are black and not pink and could be mistaken for WRX ones.

Definately inverted:

https://www.scoobynet.com/suspension...ed-struts.html

and now at 25000 miles I think mine are starting to knock/clonk like something rolling around in boot at low speeds.

So what are the definative options ??

Done a search and this appears to be them:

1. Jack up, Spray lubricant on "the shiny bit" - a temporary fix ??
2. Remove, Regrease as per NASOIC, Refit, Get geometry re done (£80 + my time) ??
3. Scooby Clinics re-conditioning service - £100 each but I have heard that they still knock after this, Get geometry re done.
4. By some KYB aftermarket rear shocks, swap over and get geometry done.
5. Go for coilovers all round eg APEX (How suitable for daily use and I have read that they can be noisy over bumps ??)

Any one got any other options ??

Darren,

Personally i think the best option is the Apex / BC coilovers. I fitted a set last weekend and i can honestly say its the best £550 i have ever spent on my car. BTW i had no problem with my standard shocks i just wanted coilovers.

Secondly there is something about the KYB shocks that doesnt match up with the standard fronts making for a dangerous setup.

Thanks.

Are they noisy at all ?? - the group buy thread says they can knock over bumps which is a noise I would like to loose.

One thing to clarify about the noises are that the springs make the usual rattle noises that all coilovers generally make when going over bumps. On damping setting 2, the noise is no more than that of the Flex's at the setting 14 (16 being the softest, 0 being hardest) on the EDFC.

Mine certianly dont knock, even over bumps / crap roads. I turned the adjusters to the softest setting and then up 14 clicks. I find it just perfect for me.

OK thanks,

2/ no need to get the geometry redone if you regrease the rear struts, you don't disturb anything adjustable!

Mine have now done 2K miles since regreasing as per NAISOC/Scoobymods with no return of the clunk.

Sorry to add fuel to the fire.

But do you notice it more in the wet? If not could be the ARB links if they are the factory ones.

However explain to me when you mean clunking (a metal clunking noise?). I've had a problem like this a little while ago on my car. I was down by the coast at the time when it first started and popped into Triton who couldn't find anything. The noise returned again a week later (normally after long-ish drives on the motorway) so booked it in with Curtis at Powerstation to look at my AST rear coilovers. He couldn't find anything so I left to find the noise returned on the way home. In the end I went straight back to Curtis had the strut stripped and rebuild .

I get another noise coming from the rear now and there is nothing I can see loose or broken and it cannot be the Strut or the ARB etc. Weird. Possible CV?

Make sure you soak the bottom bolts for a few hours first, they can be very tight. Also soak the nut on the bottom of the strut.

Castrol LM grease from Halfrauds primarily, then after inserting the bump stop past the two bearings I added a small amount of Moly disulphide grease so that if the grease layer breaks down there is still some protection from direct metal to metal contact.

The other recomendation is red 'rubber' grease as its very 'sticky' and contains a lot of anti-wear additives in case of the grease layer breaking down, there is often some on fleabay, search for red grease!

Lets not forget the diff support beam, If you've jacked the rear up on the rear diff support beam then it has good chance the plate that bolts through the beam and body's floor has distorted and is catching the beam whan under load.

Had me fooled for 2 months thinking the exhaust, shockers or diff was rattling.
All sorted now though.

Changed my rear arb from its stiffest to the mid postion and the knock has gone but I am still feeling loads of stiction in the rear shocks - at low speeds it settles after a while after stopping or when you pull away again.

Just need better weather to have a go at re-greasing.
