Coliovers
#2
'Coil-overs' is a term given to replacement suspension struts on the Impreza and many other cars.
It is a design where the suspension spring is surrounding the damper strut of the upright. A McPherson strut is infact a 'coil over' and is used on the Impreza and many other cars too.
In the usual context, the C/O is a modified design which allows some important adjustment to the suspension.
The damper part is adjustable to control precisly the simple coil spring's movement.
The spring itself can be adjusted on the damper body for position so affording the ability to raise/lower the car's ride height.
All this lot togeter means you can fit C/O's, lower the car, balance the load on each corner of the car ('corner weighting') which is great for a fast driven car, and to set the spring rate/damping of the car with comparative ease to suit it's use.
Trackday warrior cars will have hard ride springs, tight damping and ride low.
Road dialy drivers will be less extreem.
Properly done (not easy) the C/O car will be a revelation on the road, BUT, IMHO only with more basic mods done, ie Roll Bars, geometry settings etc.
As to cost, you will get a great spec from AST sold via Power Station, LEDA sell a professional set-up and fit them too (!) and several others, prices from £700 to 3000 if you like.
Buy carefully as there is rubbish out there IMO.
AST's have a big thumbs-up at present, see the thread 'AST Wows' and you will see.
I would think very hard about doing other mods to you suspension before C/O's, but if you are serious to get a great chassis it is the way to go.
