It's the first thing I did to my car and it made a huge difference.
Which one depends on how much you want to spend. I paid £55 for my Sparco alloy one, but you can pay up to £300.

...or a megre £30 for an OMP brace

But as Stef says, it does make a great difference, greatly reduces understeer, and all but eliminated it with 'Prodrive settings'

Howdy..

Yep.. they can make a difference.. if you get a decent one.. and as I call it, you "preload" it.

No offence to anyone.. but the cheaper ones arent that good... I have used sparco and omp.. and they flex... I've seen them flex...and had the paint crack and come off them.

But no one ever listens to me anyway.. lol

Cheers for the replies fellas!
up until now I have been trying to stay away from the prodrive suspension settings as they are supposed to increase tyre wear for high milages, 28k since june 99, but since I've no longer got a bird who lives so far away it may well be on the cards soon, any further ideas on who to get it from or what make will be recieved with thanks!

Personally, I have an STi Carbon Fibre jobbie on PTMW! Haven't a clue if it makes a great deal of difference, but it looks the nuts if you open the bonnet. Firefox reckons its a waste of time (IHHO ). Failing that, if he convinces me its trash, then it'll make a great ornament when I put an STi pink in replacement

However, have got to say that 28k miles in Ireland does not include many motorway miles! The roads are varied enough that Prodrive settings would not induce extra tyre wear!

Tyre wear over extra grip in NI & I know what I would go for

Hi guys..

I am currently testing a front and rear bar...

I've had it on for about one week... including one track day...

Gimme a little longer to evaluate them...and I will spill the beans

J.

ps - Upto now.. they have definately stiffened the car up (very noticable on the track - I run uprated springs)

Question

Ok so they sound like a viable option, but how easy are they to fit. Is there a Sunil or similar guide to fitting them out there somewhere. GGR's prices range from £220 to £440 + vat depending what type you are after.

The front one takes about 10 mins to fit...

The rear takes a while longer...you have to remove the back seats...and its also the rear seat belts...etc...

Once my website is up.. I will include an installation guide

Question

Just a point,I read the faq's on the SIDC site and it says the scooby suspension is a perfect balanced 4x4 and a s/brace does not make a difference at all, it also goes to say the sti's have a std fit and that's for cosmetics. Even so that the WRC's don't have one either!

before I read this I was thinking of getting one also......

Strut brace front and/or rear definately makes a difference ... just try with and without ... no contest.

My strut brace is by E-Tech from Demon Tweaks - about £70 as I recall. Looks nice.

I cannot honestly say I have noticed any difference since fitted, whether on road or track.

But maybe this isn't surprising as the design of the thing is fundamentally flawed. Alloy, dog-leg bends at either end, simple and light-weight tensionsers.

But given the shape it must have (up, back, and across) to clear the intercooler, it cannot work, given the massive task expected of it. Same goes for any other brand, including the mega-buck STi jobs.

Has anyone got any hard data apart from the usual "it turns in better" type subjective comments?

I've still got mine fitted - at least it can't do any harm!

TopCat
The WRC is seam welded and has an integral rollcage the turbo doesn't, so not really much of a comparison.

With regards to the SIDC FAQ certainly they are very useful and informative but are they 100% accurate? I was going to buy mintex1155 pads after reading all about them on the FAQ, I then rang Mintex themselves, prodrive and PE all said !not for road use!! as they take too much time to warm up!! I went for the 1144 pads instead a little better than the std my99 pads! but they work from cold.

Does anyone know if a strut brace is available for the pre-97 cars with the angle intercooler and has anyone got one fitted?

It would have to bend around the back of it, therefore would it be effective?

Question

J.

Any idea how much for yours and the cheapest one that's any good? front & rear in a 4 door.

When fitted do you need to get wheel geometry checked?

Stratman,

yes they do strut braces for the pre 97 cars. I've got an OMP one on my 96MY. Can't notice a great deal of difference. Car handled great before anyway but for cosmetics alone it's worth the £45 asking price. They are yellow, so it matches oilfiller cap etc.

Jap Innovations in Oldham did mine.

0161 652 0920 ask for Dave and tell him Richard sent you!!
