Default Powder Coating Wheels ?

I want to change the colour of my MY03 WRX wheels from Gun Metal to Gold.

I wonderd if anyone has there wheels Powder Coated ?

If so,

What is the finnish like, & how dose it stand up to brake dust staining ?

What can I expect to pay, my wheels are mint, so they dont need referbing.

Or would it be cheaper to sell mine & buy STI 8's or OZ's second hand ?

I'd have thought you could almost 'swap' yours for STI8s.

i.e. Sell yours on to a classic owner who wants gunmetal, or to someone with damaged wheels, then buy some STI8 ones. I think you'd get around £300 for your wheels, and STI8s around the same, maybe a tiny bit more.

That should be the simpler option, as then you don't need to worry about the finish.

Ive had mine done for £15 per wheel based in Birmingham.(Bournes Power Coaters)
The quality is good, have had no problems with brake dust but you will still need to clean your wheels every so often.
The only downside is the limit to colour choice. I went for the gunmetal look it wasnt the exact shade that I wanted but still came out nice.
If you want more details let me know & I will post you their address.

Shame the cant be swapped round i like the WRX wheels better than my 03 STI wheels, and would have swapped if they would fit over the Brembo's

But instead im just getting them powder coated in Anthrasite instead of Gold. £160 all in.

Some good prices quoted there !

I thought it would have been more than that for the coating,

Ticky, that would be great if you could post the address.

Mrklaw, which wheels have you had then ?

I was thinking about getting some powder coated as well. I guess its the cheapest way to get Gold wheel.
If limited to colour why not get them spray paint them? I know powder coat is better.

How long did it take to get them done. My work gets things coated takes about 3-7 days.
Whats did you do for wheels when you got them done?
I guess you had to pay to get the rubbers off then back on again.

G TOMO, went for Superleggeras in the end. Classic choice but they look great on the car

I've got someone already lined up for my OE wheels. Not fantastic price, but quick sale. (saves all the BTTT every 20 minutes on here!)

The only problem I have ever had with powder coated wheels is a tendancy to leak air from the rims, like having four slow punctures Might have just been a bad example though.

G Tomo the coaters address below

Bournes Power Coaters
32-36 Bissell Street
Highgate
Birmingham
B5 7HP
Tel : 0121 666 6595

Ray

The turn around for the wheels about 3 days.
The wheels that I had power coated were a set of (18" P1)
My usuall alloys are the (16") 5 spoke silver as on my99 cars. I have still got them as spares. The P1 alloys had no tyres when I bought them. However the above coaters can have the tyres removed & re-fitted at a small cost but not sure of the price.
Even though I would have still used my brother inlaw tyre business to have them removed & re-fitted.

It would be better to have a look at their quality of work before going ahead.
I have seen other stuff being done there, such as motorcycle frames, cam covers, alloy.

Ive never had a problem with mine holding pressure. I think it would be down to the actual alloy (rim edge).

Not really, I do get a discount & fitting/bal does not cost me anything except for 18", his tyre fitting machine only goes up to 17" max. When I was after my 18" tyres I found a place that does price match, so I told them what price I got quoted at my Bro inlaws place (trade price without fitting) & they matched it plus fitted/balanced all in. So I only safed a few pounds.

Some tyre fitters wanted over £10 each just to fit the 18" tyres?
