Question

Hey

How hard is it to paint the door handles? I've got a bright white wagon like Dougster, and I was thinking about painting the doorhandles like his.

Dougster - if you read this, can you post some up close pics of your doors?

Cheers boys and girls!

You really need 'em off to paint em, then you can release the springs etc, and take off all the little plastic bump stops, get the lock out of the way etc.
Removal needs you to take the door card off,( two screws under plastic covers, the surround to the handle pushes off forwards, best done with the window down, release clips along bottom edge with a blunt screwdriver/forkhandle, work slowly, don't worry if you break a clip, a dealer will get you some more for pennies)), gently pull away the plastic sealing membrane, undo two bolts, insert your hand and detatch the operating mechanism, then pull the handle free.
Be VERY careful not to lose the coloured plastic bit that locates the operating mech. I did, and had to search for ages to find it!!
It sounds awful, but when you've done the first, the others are about 20 minutes each.

Thanks Alcazar - I'll give it a go at some stage - any specifics regarding doors with non-electric windows? (MY98)

Question

Eh? My '98 has 4 electric windows.
I reckon there'll either be a screw in the winder, or a circlip. If it's the latter, invest in a set of circlip pliers, about £10.
If you have probs, phone IM, they have a technical helpline, and even faxed me a page from the manual, to explain the door thingy to my wife's place of work.

hehehe - that's gonna be a bit hard, me living outside the UK. Ever heard of New Zealand?
Nevermind - I'll check it out with the local panelshop. Cheers!

Depends on the window winder mech. If it's manual, there has to be a winder handle. It will be held on either by a screw through it's centre, which may be hidden by a plastic plug, or by a circlip around the centre section, which will be visible by depressing the door card around the handle. My money is on the screw, and the handle fitted to a splined drive.

hey alcazar, guess what? You were wrong - it's a circlip of somekind. I've pushed and pulled as much as I'm willing to do, so I'm just going to swallow my pride and head down to the local dealer. I'll have to chat to a panel beater chap and get some advice. Considering I'll have to do it for 4 doors I'd better get it right!
