I have to admit, we didn't turn up today. We should have played Smith from the outset, as we had little desire in midfield, which sums up our season.

Either way, you've got to feel for Smith, only a few minutes after coming on and he manages to break his leg, and dislocate his ankle. I hope he's back, and fresh, for the start of next season.

I fear that may be the end of his footballing career. An injury severe enough to break the leg AND dislocate the ankle must do severe damage to the ankle ligaments also, and footballers need those to be VERY strong. No doubt that he will receive the very, very best medical attention but I would not be surprised if he doesn't play again.

Some guy on the BBC message boards is saying that he has just finished his shift at the hospital Smudger is at and they *may* have to amputate. Apparently the whole joint is shattered.

Get Well Soon Smithy, you are a top lad, and my favourite football player

Kind of makes the result seem un-important.

Hope he makes it back playing again

I sincerely hope that's not the case. I wouldn't have thought that they'll have to amputate, but on reflection, I may have to agree with dharbige, as we may have seen the last of Smudger at the highest level.

It's such a shame, as he's such a dedicated player, always showing unrivalled commitment. He, too, is one of my favourite players, and I really hope we see him in a United shirt next season.

Dont worry about it, you've still got the carling cup final to look forward to

It's hardly ideal - our season is effectively over following next Sunday, and for a club as big as we are, that shouldn't be the case.

Following a few quality signings in the summer, we'll be back next season with a bigger bang, don't you worry about that.

Besides, if you didn't have the money available to yourself from your Russian friend, you'd be lucky to reach the final of the Carling Cup.

I think they'd be a little unhappy with the association with Crouch.

It's good to hear that Smith's injury shouldn't put his career in doubt, I'm much happier for hearing that.

There's a good few names I could throw about, but realistically, I'd be happy with what the Express are claming today; Mahamadou Diarra and Javier Mascherano. Both fairly young, and they'd do exactly what we'd need them to.

Aldo Duscher and Gennaro Gattuso would also plug the gap very well.

We'll have to see what we can pull off.

As a Liverpool fan, and well pleased with the result, its good news to hear that Alan Smith's injury treatment (this morning) is being described as a success.

Wish him well... Respect.

As a match going United supporter I feel that we are in a period of decline now and liverpool are in the ascendency.

We may finish above them this season but without major changes at OT the two clubs are moving in opposite directions.

We really need a good midfielder.

Liverpool have Gerrard, Chelsea have Lampard, but we don't really have anyone.

Our loss of form is at the same time Keane was playing less games, and eventually left.

Need a replacement or somewhere in top 4 is the best we can hope for.

I'd expect Liverpool to finish above United this season never mind next.

Like many others I cant help but think they would be well clear of them already if they had a striker that was finding the net. Rumours appear to be circling about Ronaldo after he expressed his suggestion that he would be more than willing to leave Real. Of course Owen is still linked due to a £12m release clause in his contract and I think Cisse and Morrientes will certainly generate this figure.

Yes I'd agree to be honest .
If Liverpool had the firepower of say Rooney and Van N. like Utd do they'd be a lot closer to the finished article.
Still lacking upfront imho
