+ + MENCAP CLASSIC 2005, May 28th - You know you want to! + +
Hello all,
It's that time again!! Just had confirmation from Lufton that the Classic Driving tours going ahead again this year which is good as I've been looking forward to this since last year
For those who are *still* newbies to the 'MENCAP thing' (make sure you get to this one ) The Tour is a fun drive with rally notes provided - it is not a race or timed competition so all can take part
This years event promises to provide yet another superb days motoring through spectacular Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon Countryside, exploring roads and scenic vistas to delight the most discerning participant.
All the roads will be metalled and non-damaging, the start will again more than likley be from Warminster (I will confirm asap), with the opportunity to stop for coffee on route, lunch halt will provide the opportunity to refresh yourselves, either by your own picnic or from the resturanct at the lunch halt. So far we've had the Haynes Motor Museum and an air field (with display), not sure what Dave's got planned for this year, but I know he's had a few great ideas
The finish as usual, will be within the 70 acre parkland setting of Lufton college with a traditional Somerset cream tea, with a charity auction and rewards ceremony, BBQ and entertainment in the evening for those wishing to stay late (or over night).
The entry fee of £35 will include the road book, commemorative rally plate, crew of 2 people, cream tea, awards, barbeque, evening entertainment and a camping spot for the evening if you want You will note this has gone up £10 from last year, as costs have risen ( ) But it's still *all* money to MENCAP and Lufton College and I'm sure those who have attended before will confirm it's a bargin really
Camping withing the grounds (security is there all night) is available for those wishing to do so (this is what we've done the last couple of years) and this year, as with last, there is also limited campus accomodations should you wish to "camp" in a bedroom, some twin rooms, most singles - bring your own sleeping bags (£5 single, £7.50 twin, just to cover cleaning costs). And breakfast is available in the morning for a small charge (and get up early enough eh you SIDC forum'ers! ).
The route will cover approximately 130 miles in two halves passing through some of the best countryside the West Country has to offer, market towns and picturesque villiages, many of which will offer you the opportunity to sample and purchase local specialities.
The 2004 event raised over £8000 and we had an excellent time, pictures from last year are available here: SIDC MENCAP pics and SIDC MENCAP pics 2 it'll give you an idea why we can't wait for the next one! Last year Chris, Joh, Paige and Isaac from SMACS came down and did an excellent write up, which can be seen HERE.
I will soon be getting entry forms here, and some more info (literally just been confirmed today!) If you'd like me to send you an entry when I get them through drop me a line at jendiscobob@yahoo.com or jenny.mawer@eastleigh.gov.uk or 07811 908156 (can't get a signal at the boyfriends house, but please leave a message ) , just let me know your name/address
Dave Bullen the organiser will also soon be able to answer questions, but I need to check I've got his latest phone number before I put it on here!
Looking forward to it guys!!
Jen

Already 20+ Scoobs up for this and still months to go, so get your names down!
Latest News! :
If you did the MENCAP run last year or the year before, you'll automatically be getting your Entry Forms in the post
Bit of a downer this, but the cleaners are causing problems and have massively increased their prices for working over the bank holiday weekend, so the prices of the rooms are going to be more expensive. Dave will give us more details when we know how much we're being screwed for HOWEVER, camping as always is FREEEEEEEEE!
Let you know when I've got more info.

UPDATE:
MENCAP WEBSITE now available , Entry forms available soon for downloading.
Important note - We'll be starting from the Haynes Motor Museum just off the A303 at Sparkford and they'll be a special 'touring route' available for Scoobs which will criss/cross and have the same lunch stop as the classic cars - so hopefully all the benifits without the problems
Any questions, let me know

Seeing as the tent we bought especially for last year's run has not been used since...it would be a shame not to

Yeah, that was pretty screwed up
Cheers for helping me share the burden...never seen a fatal RTA happening in front of my eyes before and don't particularly want to ever see one again. Though having driven over 400 miles to get to the event, there was no way we weren't going to do it
On a more cheery note, have you been practicing putting your tent up Chris? I hope not as it was quite entertaining watching you making a pig's ear out of it
