They can only be supplied fitted by a Clifford approved dealer. Clifford's website has a dealer/postcode search.

Thought the whole point was that they had to be professionally fitted - ie by a Clifford dealer.....

 

i thought that too, but you can obviously get them - probably illegal though !

Presumably, if you tell the Insurance company you've got a Clifford fitted, they will want to see the Certificate of Installation from an Approved fitter.

If the Certificate cannot be supplied or it can but the fitter stated on it is not approved then in the event of a claim (for theft), they probably won't pay out.....

Matts right, insurance companies require it fitted by an approved installer and need a copy of the fitting certificate.

 

Is it not right that - if say i purchased a car that had a clifford unit in it, but it came with out a certificate - or it was lost etc, you can go to a registered installer and ask them to check it (for a fee obviously) and they can then write a new cert??? at a fraction on the cost???

Why the hell do you want to install one yourself?!

It takes people who do it day in/day out many hours to install and setup a Concept 600.

A badly installed Clifford is a total nightmare. The most important thing on any alarm is the installation.

Feel free to have a go, but personally I don't think its worth the risk.

 

I have fitted quite a few Cat1 systems in the past, but not a Clifford - never had a problem with my installs - all joints soldered and hidden into the wiring loom of the car....

The worse install i had to do was on a porsche - no space to put anything !

As I understand it, the Cliffords all come without any installation instructions at all. That's why the dealers have to go on an installers course.

Definitely the most important part of a Clifford system is the installation.

 

I have a copy of the instructions..... seems relatively simple in terms of Cat1 installations. I reckon I could do just as good a job as trained installation - but the waranty would not apply - I am enquiring to Clifford what has to be done to become an approved installer.... I await their response...

Same old story, you can do a better job yourself many times over than the pros, but at the end of the day if you aint qualified then thats it as far as the insurance company is concerned.

I actually went to the main clifford installer in the Leeds area a few years back to have a imobiliser fitted.Now i already had an imobiliser fitted that i had installed myself.No can do, he had to remove that and have only one fitted, his.

Now mine, i had taken the drivers seat out, and put the box under the carpet and then seat back in, i had cut upto two metres of the orignal wiring out, and soldered my connections into place, as far apart as was possible, with the joints in obscure places thats where hard to get to.

His box was put under the dash, and all the joints made directly next to it.Go figure!??

Still theres always the case where the guy in street hasnt got a clue and thats the people who the insurance companies are avoiding.

Nick - would like to hear what Clifford say - Am considering the same sort of thing. (Have a degree in electronics, I should be able to install car alarms!!)

Is it the alarm company that you need, or is there an insurance body that regulates the fitting- and therefore issues the certificates? (like Thatcham or the ABI)

haven't heard from them but I believe the alram gets aproved by Thatcham to gain its rating of Cat1 etc.. then its down to Clifford to aprove its installers - i presume a course, but then who knows - I will let you know when I have heard...

Its a piece of cake when you have done a few - cable joints and positioning is the key....

Do you know anything about VSIB? Someone at work thought they may have something to do with the car alarm certification business. However they could simply represent a voluntary code of practice.

 

its not really too clever posting the fitting instructions to an alarm like this is it????!!!!, seen as fitting is similar to 'unfitting if you catch my drift!!

 

wasn't difficult to find... There were links to it on the Clifford site!!
