The risk of a total loss however small and having to pay it myself would spoil my fun, so I need say £12K cover, but a £1k excess would not bother me for Knockhill. Any suggestions/recommendations?

If it is a SIDC day JohnS usually organises special rate through Eggar Lawson.
Don't know if this still applies but it is usually good value.
If you are doing anything other than a SIDC day then insurance tends to be a little expensive. Check your own insurance doesn't cover you though. Remember SIDC days aren't time trials or racing just well organised track days.

as Willie has said,SIDC dys are well organised and classed as driver enhancement, not timed or with places awarded, also cars are not numbered so it is not classed as racing .I was told a story about a motorcycle track day were a guy binned his road bike.the ins co tried to get out of paying,as he had not informed them, but as he could prove that the bikes were not numbered, timed or that places were awarded,it was not motorsport.he eventually got payed out.

I can no longer get the excellent group deals on insurance that we used to. Following a series of expensive track day claims at the start of last year (not Subaru!), Egger Lawson has to review their premiums/risks etc, as outgoings were far in excess of income from premiums. The events I organise at Knockhill are still in the lowest risk category, so qualify for their cheapest rates.
Most accidents generally cost in the region of £3 - £4k to repair, and there is an option for about £5k of cover which costs about £55 I think, which is very popular. If you want more cover, then the premiums can rise quite a bit, but you can offset this by taking a higher excess.

If you are going to be doing a lot of track days then it may be worth considering changing your policy to an insurer that covers track days.
Greenlight will cover your car for its full replacement value for around £60/track day, and the excess is just double the normal (ie £800)
This is on top of what is normally a very competitive price for the main policy.
They are also very modification friendly, and all mods are included in the replacement value.
Normal disclaimers, no association, blah blah blah, just a satisfied customer
Andrew.
