My Mate got caught by the traffic cops doing an average of 97 mph on the motorway.
What will happen to him, eg worst/best case senario.
Cheers

althooooouuuuuuuugh it might not matter. just because they sometimes give out ban's, it doesn't always mean they give out penalty points at the same time
But seeing as your mate already has 3 points he could be on a sticky wicket, but as he is under the 100mph barrier he could plead for the "car for work" and hopefully get away with points, I would guess 4-6 plus a pretty big fine.
The other thing is if it goes to court, get a hold of the police report as soon as to check out if they have just quoted the average speed or if they are saying "drivers speed varied form XXmph to XXXmph"

depends which are he got caught. I got pulled for just under a ton (average over 4-miles) and received a healthy 4 points and £200 fine - that was Forfar about 5 years ago.

I was recently caught (a few weeks ago) doing 98.8 on the M5.
Caught by a police car, sitting on a slip road with a laser.
It was about midday, dry conditions, and at the point that I was caught the road was relatively clear.
The traffic did get quite heavy, progressively, and I naturally slowed because of this.
I then saw the police car in my rear view mirror and was pulled over moments after.
Was told:
- Up to 96, they could issue a fixed penalty of 3 points and a fine.
- Between 96 and 100, (ie me) it would go to the magistrates for them to decide whether to haul me into court or allow me to plead guilty by post. In these cases a heavier penalty (points/fine) can be expected and a ban is not out of the question.
- Over 100 and it would definately be into court and a ban likely unless I had an excellent defence.
I was also breathalised, and the test was completely clear.
This was of course in England, and I've no idea if being caught under identical circumstances in Scotland would have exactly the same results. It may even differ region to region / county to county.
Anyway, it was only a few weeks ago and I'm still waiting to receive my letter. Was told it could take up to ten weeks to hear.
Just took delivery of a new car last week, but this has taken the shine off things a little.
And yes - it was stupid...
