Most of the ones in the back of vans use laser to calculate your speed, then take a photo before you've managed to blink.

Is there anyone here who knows about different speed cameras ?
The reason being is that I drove past one of the cameras in the back of a van yesterday.
What I need to know is are they like the handheld jobbies that measure over a distance or is it fairly instant.
I hit the brakes as soon as I saw it but it might have been too late. If it was too late I am fooked
Any positive advice would be good. Thanks

I am led to believe (from a reliable source) that the laser cameras (back of van / behind traffic car grill) have a range of 1 mile so, so if you see it you could easily be waaaaayy too late to do anything about it. Depends on the road as it would need to be fairly straight/good visibility for this sort of range to be used but these devices make it very easy to get nabbed.

You may be okay, if it is a road fund dodger detector. These are sprouting up a lot in the Central belt. Other than that, you will have to wait and see.
Best way of defence is an Origin B2 and LRC100 combo'

I can vouch for Andyr's comment as i got nabbed by the shiny arsed Fife cops with one of these systems 2 months ago.
I have seen one on my way down the A90 (after Dundee) the last two weeks running (Friday avo). Issued them with "the bird" whilst going past at 60 mph both times

Origin B2 GPS plus a BEL radar detector.
The radar / laser detector in any GPS unit isn't up to much - usually made by Whistler !!
BEL still make the best detectors, hence one of each.

Scoobylav,
The Origin B2 costs about £430, but with some discounts you should be able to knock £50+ of that.
I got mine as a freebie for demonstation use !! as I've sold a lot of BEL radar units recently to friends.
Unless you do a lot of driving on roads you don't know too well or trips into England stick with a radar detector, as you probably know all the local camera sites up here.
Having used it for a few months now, I wouldn't go out and buy one myself.

The cameras in the white vans are the same as traffic cars. The white van usualy of french variety peugeot/ citroen hide out of site with a remote camera recording the cars onto video.

Not sure if this is any use but Ive seen a red van, looks like a refrigerated van that sites on the top of fly overs with two cameras sitting on tripods pointing down at the traffic

40 mph limit from CA to Kettins crossroads IS A JOKE
Means the road after the end of the limit is sooo much more dangerous - people gasping to overtake before the hill.
not long before a head on RTA IMHO

Just tell the judge that the laser was pointed at your eyes and in a blind panic hit the accelerator. Used to be a problem with kids and the pen laser key rings in Dundee.

Phil - tell me about it. It takes feckin ages to drive that road now. The police hideaway as you come in to Coupar Angus will be looking up the road now not into town. They will get loads of people coming down the slope.

David Beckham got of scott free when he was caught in these circumstances by using the defence of "Duress".Basically his lawyer argued that he was being followed closely by the paperazzi at the time and accelerated in order to get away from them to "Avoid" an accident from happening. This defence could be applied to a member of the public if you were a victim of ,perhaps, roadrage and you were mearly over the limit breifly to avoid a potentially dangerous situation............just a thought.
