Question

Inspired by Gossy et al's antics:

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=155802

I am wondering if we could arrange a drift day up in Scotland at some point. Anyone have any ideas of where might be a suitable venue?

Personally I've never been that impressed by Crail. There isn't an enormous amount of runoff, both corners go off-camber and it's just right handers. And the car is minging afterwards. Any other places?

Alas there is nowhere else with the space, lack of noise restrictions, and an understanding owner.

If you went on a wet day, and hired the facility for private use (this is possible), then you could use some of the main runways for slalom/drifting courses etc. You would need some cones, or the Scottish Elises alternative of Safeway bags filled with sand from a nearby beach

Willie from Crail just charges a fixed fee per person. Used to be about £30/£35 each for a whole day, but is negotiable, depending on numbers.

Can't say I'm interested in having to spend a day removing Diesel from the car, are there any other suitable venues ??????

Knockhill do a car control course, would it be posible to use their facility with our own cars ?

Cool

Sorry 2 hijack here John

I spoke to Willie at the tail end of last year with a view to potentially hiring Crail for a day The figures banded around were for 10 - 15 cars at £30 / £35 per car for the day. This would however not include Crail staff. In the event we could get 25 - 30 peebs interested we could have the whole venue with staff for what ever we liked. Oval / strip / slalom etc. If there`s enough GENUINE interest I can get back to Will and talk turkey

(hijack mode off)

Last year I did 5 track days (3 Scottish Elises and 2 SS-R) at Crail which included use of the Oval and a mixture of circuits. On the SS-R days there was also a 1/4 mile course set up as well. After having car covered in desiel from the oval I suggested to Willie that water was used instead at future days and this seemed to preferable to most people. A variety of circuits are possible and I found them realy enjoyable. 1/4 mile was also populary with many people, though not me as there were no corners in it :-) All this for £35 for a day which I think was a bargain.

Downside is that there can be some debris on track. I would advise that people spend a bit of time at the beginning of the day checking the track and removing debris. I also found break up in the track surface, especially at braking points whch could cause more debris. Of course stone chip damage will only realy happen if you drive too close to other cars.

There is plenty of run off and the track is pretty wide in most areas. I have seen two incidents where cars have hit tyre walls. Both happened at the same place and both were down to driver error. They happened on different days but were due to drivers driving too fast on their first lap out which should have been a warm up/familiarization lap. Too fast into a corner on cold tyres.

Despite some stone chip damage and a good bit of tyre wear, I thoroughly enjoyed all my days at Crail. £35 for such a varied days playing is pretty good value I reckon. I am going to miss all these track days this year. March last year at Knockhill SIDC was my first one and by the end of the year I managed 21 more at Crail, Kames and Knockhill.

Will certainly be along to events where I can manage it. Not being on track myself this year will mean more time to come out videoing with you guys. Should have a selection of 2002 SIDC events edited soon and will put together a VCD. Still trying to learn about PC Video Editing. So time consuming and I have been too busy looking after Skye. Should hopefully get some time in the next month or so before the season starts up again. Will miss being on track myself as its great fun, but can't afford it this year.
