You know you lived in Edinburgh too long when...

1)You haven't heard a Scottish accent in a week...in fact you might not even know any Scottish people
2)You once snogged 50 people at Hogmanay on Princes Street, but now refuse to go back to the street party.
3)You're genuinely surprised when you meet someone who was born in Edinburgh
4)You have Darius's number on your mobile
5)You think Trainspotting was set in Govan
6)Salt and Sauce on your chips is normal
7)You've been to penny blacks and pizza paradise but never to the castle or the zoo
8)You remember when Revolution used to be Century2000 and Bar OZ used to be Oddfellows
9)You support Scotland AND England at football - but prefer a game of rugby
10)You know everyone's mobile and email address but don't know their second name or home address
11)The Festival is your least favourite time of year even though you sublet your rat infested box room to 9 aussies.
12)The cost of paying off all your outstanding parking tickets is more than the value of your car
13)You know how cockburn street should really be pronounced
14)The stench of hops from the Caledonian brewery becomes 'rather pleasant', and doesn't remind you of pot noodles any more
15)You've sha*ged at least 3 people who work at Standard Life
16)You've never been in your communal back garden even though you pay £20 a month towards getting the grass cut
17)You don't think there's anything wrong with paying more for a 1 bedroom flat than Hibs paid for their latest star player
18)You know all the lyrics to 'brown eyed girl' and 'I think we're alone now'

I remember Revolution/Century 2000 as a cinema before it was EVER a night club - sure it began with C (no, not Cameo), but can't remember what it was called....
That was also in the days when the area opposite the Revolution was one HUGE MASSIVE gravel car park with Cotters Coach offices in it....
...and I am only 32 before anyone thinks I'm 60!!!

SB - unless your spelling was intentional, it is "Goldbergs"
I remember going to the Santa's Grotto in there when young.
Quite a tacky store as I remember, but huge glass fronted shop which didn't seem architectually TOO bad for its era. Seen a lot worse - St James Centre for one, which it & the New Scottish Office buildings were erected to replace a lovely Georgian Square much like George Sq (albeit a bit run down).

Yippee - found a piccy of huge car park in Western Approach Road.....
piccy of old western approach road
It is looking down from the castle - the castle terrace car park is in the immediate foreground (and still exists),.
On the far middle right, you can see the edge of the Caley Hotel at the junction of Lothian Road/Kings Stables Road/Castle Terrace.
Right bang in the middle of the picture is the junction for the Western Approach Road (the road was routed differently to how it is now). Either side of the Western Approach Road are the two huge gravel car parks.
That whole area is now Sheraton (left), and Standard Life (right).
[subnote] : you can see how the western approach road has been rerouted in this photo - if you look at the big car park in the middle of the picture, you can see the electricity substation behind it (just in front of the tallest 'skyscraper'). This electricity substation is the one that is currently lit by green/purple/blue coloured lights on the left as you approach Lothian Road on the Western approach road. As you can see, in the 70's and before, where the road is now is the car park, and the road was actually further 'south' towards where the Sheraton is now.

I would guess at that photo being from late 70's/ early 80's as there are Austin Maxi's and the like in the Castle Terrace car park.
Sheraton was built sometime around 1985 I think, and I definetely remember these car parks up until the early 80s.
Was VERY handy car parking for Princes St. As you say, a planners dream. Guess NCP (or equivalent of 70s/80s) couldn't resist the value of the ground to sell them off - although think they were council car parks now I come to think of it - I'd guess at 10p for 2 hours :-))))
They were pretty mucky car parks on wet days though - FULL of HUGE puddles and potholes.

Oh, and here is another one from the 70's. You can see where A F Noble used to be located on Market St - the building with GARAGE written in the windows. That's where my dad took his Subaru to be serviced.
south st andrews st of old looking across Princes St to Subaru garage
...seriously, can anyone identify the car parked on the right hand side of the street? I'm sure it's a Skoda, but not sure....

Another good one - Princes St on a busy Saturday afternoon - it has to be a Saturday as the pavement is CROWDED - yet look how few cars are on the roads!!!! This is what always amazes me from 70's pics - just shows how over-populated we are with cars now.....

Sneaky petes...mmm, memories. I was actually tossed out one morning around 3am, for being too drunk !! Only memory of the neighbouring Kasbar was sticking to the floor....don't ask
Anyone remember the original Woolies across from the North British, sorry, Balmoral Hotel.
Pubs that are now gone: The Burnt Post on Lothian road. Some shady pub at the top of the grass market, tucked in the corner from that other well known est. The W.B.

Yep - remember Woolies - was where Burger King and that row of shops is now opposite NB (Balmoral) as you said. Was Toy Dept not upstairs?
Sneeky Pete's - hehehe....do you remember the jukebox. "Bye bye Miss American Pie" was on every 15 minutes :-) Pulled quite a few times in there of all places (must have been desperate/beer goggles/desperate/lucky/desperate/paralytic!!!).
Remember Burnt Post as went there for underage drinks - other good underage pub was the Preservation Hall (Pressie Hall) on Victoria St (now Finnegans Wake) where could get served no probs. Dark & dingy and good live music (unlike now).
...and what about Cinderella Rockerfellers nightclub/disco in Stockbridge!!!!

...and going back WAY further, I bet you young guys didn't even realise that there was once a railway station behind the Caley Hotel at the West End of Princes St....it is now the hotel car park for the Caley (where you will see an old signal standing at the entrance).
I'm also fairly positive that where Standard Life's frontage on Lothian Road is now - used to be a rug/carpet shop...

Goldbergs was cool !! (when you were a kid at least).
We used to mess around in the lifts and get chased by the security guards for not buying anything !!
Does anyone else remember Coasters ?? I'm pretty sure that came before Outer Limits !!.. used to be a great pickup joint when you were 12 !!
