Default Question about API

Has anyone ever brought a reconditioned gearbox from API? I only ask because My gearbox is on it's way out and I'm not sure on weather to buy a cheap 2nd hand box or buy a reconditioned box for a bit of extra piece of mind and a few more £££s

Many thanks

Matt

Although I haven't bought a recon gearbox from API, they have a very good reputation and come highly recommend by many. Best give David a call and see what they can offer, he will advise on the best option for your car. Personally I would get one from API and have the peace of mind.

Fair point, but I've never had to go down this route before with any of my other imprezas so just wanted to be sure.

The question Id ask myself is why has my box gone/going in the first place? Is it up to the job?

A rebuilt box from them is a better buy if you can afford it. But it comes down to the car, if its a £1000 uk turbo then an expensive rebuilt box isn't really warrented if you see what im saying.

To be honest rob I just think it could be wear and teer, I've only had the car since last September and within the first 2 weeks it started to feel a bit notchy going into 2nd but was liveable, but last week I done a gearbox oil change and almost straight away it was much worse in 2nd and it now the same going into 3rd. Oh and it's a 98 turbo 2000 running standard power.

I've just got a price today to replace 4th, 5th and 6th synchros in my 6 speed with the updated synchros from a small but long established 4x4 gearbox specialist for under £400 bloke on the phone said "it's changing 3 synchros, its a days work for one of our lads, why would I charge you more?" Box will be out this weekend if I have time.

Synchros are around £25 each, I'm having 3 changed so £75, he's collecting my box, doing the work then returning it and the price is less than £400 hopefully closer to £300 he thought.

Regards

Prolly not.

The carbon synchros are circa 42.00 each + VAT £126.00 + VAT = 151.20 inc

So he is charging less than 250 to strip and replace the synchro's.

A days work here is £384.00 + VAT [ £ 460.80 inc ] 8 hours at £48.00 + VAT an hour

Not a difficult job to do, but it does take time, done carefully.

Fair enough...when explained it doesn't seem so bad.
