Question about API
Has anyone ever brought a reconditioned gearbox from API? I only ask because My gearbox is on it's way out and I'm not sure on weather to buy a cheap 2nd hand box or buy a reconditioned box for a bit of extra piece of mind and a few more £££s
Many thanks Matt |
Buy cheap, buy twice!

Although I haven't bought a recon gearbox from API, they have a very good reputation and come highly recommend by many. Best give David a call and see what they can offer, he will advise on the best option for your car. Personally I would get one from API and have the peace of mind.

The best place in the UK, THE END!

David O'Brien is a gentleman and as honest as the day is long. Buy from API with confidence!

I have just sold my 5 speed that was rebuilt by api back in 2008,it was ran at 380bhp for 4 years then at 354bhp for the last year.still a solid box with no noises at all.im taking my 6 speed there for a rebuild soon

with almost 1300 posts you should already know the answer to that,
API all day long, If you Buy cheap, you will buy twice. |
Fair point, but I've never had to go down this route before with any of my other imprezas so just wanted to be sure.:thumb:

The question Id ask myself is why has my box gone/going in the first place? Is it up to the job?
|
did for my classic last year, API was just great, excellent service and over-friendly, shipped to belgium quickly as well.
|
A rebuilt box from them is a better buy if you can afford it. But it comes down to the car, if its a £1000 uk turbo then an expensive rebuilt box isn't really warrented if you see what im saying.

a lot of people use the gearbox to slow down and the impreza really doesnt like this abuse.

What kind of money are you parting with for a six speed rebuild

Forgot to ad that the gears are only notchy when changing up from 1st to 2nd and the 2nd to 3rd they feel ok when changing down.

I've just got a price today to replace 4th, 5th and 6th synchros in my 6 speed with the updated synchros from a small but long established 4x4 gearbox specialist for under £400 bloke on the phone said "it's changing 3 synchros, its a days work for one of our lads, why would I charge you more?" Box will be out this weekend if I have time.
Update to follow Mick |
Had a quote from API for a recon box + delivery = £780

Synchros are around £25 each, I'm having 3 changed so £75, he's collecting my box, doing the work then returning it and the price is less than £400 hopefully closer to £300 he thought.
Regards Mick |

Must be bloody expensive synchros then...£400 a day?
The carbon synchros are circa 42.00 each + VAT £126.00 + VAT = 151.20 inc So he is charging less than 250 to strip and replace the synchro's. A days work here is £384.00 + VAT [ £ 460.80 inc ] 8 hours at £48.00 + VAT an hour Not a difficult job to do, but it does take time, done carefully. David |
Fair enough...when explained it doesn't seem so bad.
