Default Vf30 crack!!

I just received a vf30 turbo from a breaker on here however there is quite a big crack in the hot side which I didn't know about

I have read that the VF turbos are renowned for cracking but will this effect boost.

I can buy a new hot side from eBay for £115 plus import tax but would it be worth it?

Many thanks

Dave

I would return it to the breaker and look for another one, unless the crack had been pointed out and I had agreed to accept it.

When you say a big crack how big are we talking here any pics?.Your right though about exhaust housings getting cracks as they do and it rarely affects boost.SJ.

As above and if its cracked through the wastegate seat, it can often give problems.

Why would you accept a cracked item unless you had agreed this with the breaker!

I wasn't told it was cracked and it was left on my door step. When I opened the package I noticed the crack.

Send it back. ..

Its not uncommon for VF's to crack on the exhaust side, I've seen a couple.
When I removed my (working perfectly) VF28 it had a large crack. I sold it to a member on here for £100 and was fully open about the crack etc. The chap took the chance on it and as far as I know it worked perfectly and still is.

I just had a look at a VF35 that came off of my car ages ago,and it has a crack on the exhaust housing by the wastegate button valve and that turbo boosted up fine and held boost without any problems,my advice would be to contact the seller email him over some high res pics of the cracks and tell him you will fit it and if it leaks or does not boost up and hold boost properly I will send it back for a 100% refund, but I would say 9 times out of 10 it will be fine.SJ.

The problem is, I was just collecting parts for a remap so it could be a month or two down the line before I fit it and then I'll have the cost of the map, removal etc. if there is an issue.

Dave if your not happy mate just send it back, exhaust housings do get cracks especially on the VF series turbos which are prone to that but still function with no issues what soever but it's down to you see what the seller can offer you, apart from the cracks was the compressor wheel solid in its housing with no in and out or side to side movement?.SJ.

I know, its just a pain in the back side. I've emailed him for a return address. No movement at all so all's good with that it's just this crack. As I said I'll post pictures up tomorrow.

Well at least it sounds like a solid turbo, just the crack that is worrying you get the pics up when you can,one more thing i forgot to ask you is the crack flat or raised if it's flat I recon you will be fine, when the turbo get hot all them cracks kind of blend in if you get my drift.SJ.

It doesn't matter if its raised, lowered, side to side or just a tiny little mark. You bought and paid for a turbo that was in A1 condition and its not. Either send the turbo back for a full refund or take a partial refund and keep the turbo.

That surely will be fine?I'm no expert,in fact I'm mechanically retarded but I'm sure the experts will agree with me.It'd still be a good idea to ask for a part refund due to this "issue".

Best of luck

I've removed one with a crack similar to that and the owner knew nothing about it until I noticed it, his car ran well and held boost fine.

Dave the crack looks worst than it is mate, the crack on my VF35 is practically in the same place as yours as I said on a earlier post, just by the wastegate button valve and it boosted up perfect, fit it and see but I think you will be OK and the turbo will deliver the goods and boost up fine.SJ.

What happens if he fits it, its fine for a month and then ***** itself. You reckon the seller will refund....not a chance.
The crack on my 28 was identical and as I said, still worked perfectly (made 345bhp) but it was still cracked so was priced accordingly. I'll hazard a guess and say the op paid top dollar for this one.

I bought a cracked VF too and wasn't aware of the crack before i paid. The breaker cancelled the postage and refunded me the money in full. It may well have been fine but i just wouldnt take the chance when paying out £250.

£150 is a decent price
