Default Break or sell?

After some genuine opinions on this, my insurance is due this weekend and I'm toying with the idea of selling my blob STI, I don't want to but work is rubbish at the minute I'm behind on my wages and have a mortgage to pay so I'm struggling to justify a car which I do 1500 miles a year in.

2003 blob STI type uk
Just under 70k miles
Quite a bit of history ( would have to read through it all )
Cam belt done at 50k miles
Exedy pink clutch ( would have to check receipt for mileage )
Millers cfs 10w50 and a black oe filter when I bought it (12 months ago) and the same last weekend
Toyo proxes all round ( 2 on the front are recent )
Alyn at AS performed a diagnosic to find the cause of an erratic idle ( IACV ) this included a compression check and new pfr7 plugs.
New filter on k&n typhoon inner wing CAI
I've had the scoop painted to cover stone chips on the leading edge.

Probably loads of stuff I've missed but this is just to get a general opinion, when I bought it the car already had 3" cobra system from turbo back, full decat ( cats included if car goes ) CAI and a scooby clinic remap on vpower to 332bhp.

Now..... The reason for this post lol, the only problem with the car (appart from the redstuff pads on the font) is the gearbox has ( suspected ) worn synchro on 5th, tbh its only ever been notchy into 5th maybe twice in the 12 months I've owned it and it's normally when going from 6th to 5th at high rpm when slowing for a corner etc, I fully intended to drop the box out and get the synchros done had a quote of £600 for the work but can't say I've had the money spare to justify it.

Now then, would I be overly optimistic to get £5500 for it as is? I've totted up roughly what I think I could achieve if I broke it for parts, although I've broken cars in the past and know full well all the ****e that comes with it, posting parts, dealing with muppets and being stuck with a room full of parts that aren't in great demand.

Some pics of it as it stands

Cheers

Mick

if you can get rid in one piece i would, maybe worth a bit more in bits but i recently started a thread about breaking my car and got so annoyed with the idiot pms i deleted the thread.
but on the plus side it generated enough interest for the car to be sold in one piece.

i still have a few bits to sell on like wheels etc but im going to do it elsewhere as i cant be bothered with the idiots on here.

Wow when I received an email saying "tubbytommy has replaced on your thread" I thought uh oh here we go

Appreciate the input fella, I've broken two classics for a good mate on here and a gt four of my own and tbh I can break a classic in maybe 3 days down to bare shell but then there's at least 6 months of tripping over parts that won't sell etc

Then there's all the emails, texts and pm's ( no one likes ringing anyone like the olden days ) offering 50p for an exhaust etc.

Regards

Mick

its the give me first dibs ill take it crap i find annoying.
someone posts this you pm them a price and you know 100% you will get a reply offering less if you deliver/fit/give them a reacharound.
i got to the point where i sent a reply with price and if i got the generic "will you take?" email just sent back no thanks and blocked them.

the usual stuff will go first but then you will be left with a lot of stuff to get rid off thats not so easy, depends if you have the room i guess and how much you need the money.

I think he means me mate.tubs just for the record I certainly didn't mean to offend you with my offer, you caught me a bit by surprise as you said Feb you were breaking it which wouldn't have been a problem at all,I've had an expensive Jan so far and my offer even though it was only 50 quid less than your price was all I could afford matey.

I don't waste people's time tubs and I hope you don't think I do,I have good trader feedback for a reason just like you.

If you still have the wheels in Feb then gimme a shout

Cheers

not at all you were just among many, ranging from "ill give you 5k for the whole car as i can get an sti for 6" to just general "ill have it mate" then no other replys.

£5500 is cheap. I've been looking for an sti for a while. Most are 7k plus.
I think it would sell whole.

Of course I agree with that, just thought you was breaking for a reason (more money) but requires time and patience.

Seems it was a surprise for all the pm's and time wasters. Thought you of all knew that.

no surprise really. only surprise was the epic stupidity of some of them.

one guy said he would give me £50 quid if i drive 80 miles to him and fit my spec c steering rack for him.

worse thing he was actually serious too.

Sounds like a bargain to me!

I would have thrown all my tools in a hire van and went straight down to set about fitting the rack! Would have only ended up a few hundred out of pocket

oh there's more.

one guy wanted to swap me the genuine sti spoiler for a fake one and £100 if i delivered it too........................

reason was his car was blue and he bought a silver copy spoiler from ebay and it was cheaper than getting it painted.

I personally don't think you'll get anymore by breaking it. A 6 speed with worn syncro's isn't worth much in my opinion, you may of been quoted £600 to repair it but I guarantee it'll need other bits doing while apart. The 6 speed is the biggest chunk of money when breaking a newage sti, you don't really have any big money mods (no disrespect intended) so breaking it just doesn't make sense.

£5500 is all its money in my opinion. Get it advertised.

Appreciate your down to earth reply fella, I've read all about all the extra parts specialists sometimes need to replace, without wanting to get into a debate about what a gearbox may or may not need my view was if my 6 speed is working 100% fine with only a rare ( 2 or 3 times in 12 months ) notchy change into 5th then swapping the synchros and possibly 5th gear if slightly worn would be all the box would need, this was john pies thoughts who apparently build rally cars and quoted me for the work.

Like you say though until its open and you can see what's going on then yes it may or may not cost more.

I added up everything on the car using the prices of a popular and trusted breaker on here who I use myself and tbh even in pretty much standard trim it added up to considerably more than 5.5k, obviously this depends on people wanting the standard parts and paying close to the asking price (not likely) hence the reason for this thread.

As a base guide I thought
Long engine £1350
6 speed, prop, diff, gear selector £800
Turbo £300
Exhaust £200
Wheels £300
Brakes £400
Front end £850

There's £4200 without trying lol

If I could get 5.5k I would be happy tbh, I may well post a detailed add before the weeks out

Cheers

I had 35k in a mk1 sierra zetec turbo. It wasnt a cosworth but had lots of cossy stuff on it. I broke that as it got crashed into and wrote off...

It was a ****ing ball ache on forums and ebay with timewasting ***** as tommy says. Took probably 9 months to shift everything and i guess i got about 8k back from the car.

Things like a £6500 paintjob is worth nothing on car that used to be a foot longer lol

In the end i just got rid of stuff for peanuts just to get rid. Some guy on ebay won the front doors for 1p each, i clearly said collect only so he contacts me to say can imstrap them to a pallet and he will have them collected... He was told to **** off! I left them on the drive and went to work. Courier phones me up and says they were supposed to be packaged etc and on a pallet... I said for 2p you can shove them up your **** for all i care. He was told whats what and that was it. The guy still left positive feedback tho lol
