Subaru Hatch Cosworth Short Block
Hi guys,
after finally resetting my password I can now ask for your advice on my car situation.
to cut a long story short the hatch suffered a catastrophic engine failure... resulting in a block replacement necessary. Has anyone installed a cosworth SB into their hatch at all? If so are you happy with it and anything else you would do at time of installation? I have been advised to fit uprated valves at the time of the install although the standard valves were fine and can be refitted.
Any advise would be great thanks guys!!

Speak to one of the companies that build engines ie engine tuner, API etc. they will probably work out cheaper. Not used either of them but they have excellent reputation on here and offer sound advice.

Thanks for replies guys, yeah it will be the off the shelf block from powerstation.org. It looks to be about £4000. It has forged pistons, forged conrods and a forged sti crankshaft. I've been told that I could fit forged pistons to my brand new block which I will need to sell but its the cosworth name and reliability I really am after.

ring round and get a bit more advice from some builders... you might find a 'better' more cost effective option other than going cosworth.

Unless you really want the 'Cosworth' name you can save a shed load of money by buying from someone else. I can supply an all new forged short engine for £2500 exchange, the block will be used but re-bored and skimmed, new sti heat treated crank, acl race bearings, H beam Rods, Mahle pistons, 11mm oil pump. All parts tried and tested.

ohh im scared now why would the cosworth block have issues I cant see why if its exactly the same as an engine builder would make yet built in the cosworth factory? Im not talking about the cosworth engine put into the CS400 its purpose built by cosworth? If this is the one you're talking about please tell me the issues! Thanks mate

Cosworth short block is a 2.5 Subaru block the same as any 2.5 sit, however it's the internals that are all Cosworth branded Steel crank or you can go for a billet which cost an extra £3k pistons and rods etc You can spec it up.

At what power levels have the 2.5 CDBs been proven to be reliable and for how many miles? I am aware it depends on use etc. but to get an idea as this seems interesting.
How is it made sure that the aluminium used for the insert has the same thermal expansion coefficient as the one used in the block?

there are quite a few cars using inserts to make SCDB into CDB both in flat four and flat six variations...pretty sure Simon, Matty and Andy all run inserts in the flat sixes...there have been a fair number of 2.5s modified in this way too, iirc Bannys' old 666bhp monster was an EJ257 with inserts...Alyn is the man to confirm what my feeble old brain can't remember

the blocks (wether 4cyl 2.0, 2.2 or 2.5 and the 6cyl 3.3 and at some point we will have the 3.0 H6 developed) are a fully machined & engineered process - its not simply a case of 'pushing' a piece of ali in........
we have developed and refined these inserts over the last couple of years and have a fair number running above 600's (totally unthinkable in any other manner on the 2.5's) in both road and competition/drag use with no known issues or failures to this point.........
we also have a number of teams running these inserts in extreme boost/compression applications being pushed far beyond anything seen in other disciplines that have extended their refresh intervals from every 1-2 events to a cursory glance at the end of a season!!!
