Would you buy a nice wrx from a clueless owner.
So i'm just back from a test drive in an 06 WRX with an abundance of high standard mods which i've copy and pasted below. The car has 21k on it so its still young and it did feel solid on the road and pulled very well. My only issue is.. The owner had no idea about cars, to start with the drivers seat was in a full on gansta recline, when i asked how to switch between the multiple maps he had no idea that was even possible and any questions regarding the engine was met with a blank face. He then went on the claim the carbon roof vein cost 2.5 grand and I happen to know they are about 300 tops.. Credit where credits due, there were receipts for all work and services ect but i couldn't help feel un-confident about the life its had. What do you guys reckon?
Mods.

Why not ask if the owner would be happy for you to have it inspected/valued by a Subaru specialist? If they are happy for you to do that then they might not be trying to pull a fast one. With modifications like those, the owner either bought the car for ragging around or knows more than they are letting on. 21k miles on a 7 year old car is not always a good thing, especially if all journeys have been short and it's been hammered from cold everytime.

I wouldn't.
If you get a funny or bad feeling about a car my advice is to steer clear.
Clueless owners tend to do things like neglect changing the oil and run them on 95RON...

So he has more money than sense, there's a lot of them about, cheque book tuner.
He or someone else took it to a specialist and got his wallet out, it's no bad thing in my mind, and by the sound of it he got some good parts and sound advice, at least he kept all the receipts.
If he's been driving "Gangsta" style it's probably not had much abuse because you can't drive one of these cars hard while lying down, probably had it all done for bragging rights and can't afford the credit card bills now as well as the fuel, that or he's a poor little rich kid and fancies a change at mummy and daddies expense.
If the price is right get it bought, but as it's a 2.5 running that power send it straight off to get it forged.

It's a black wrx with black rota grids yeah. Not sure exactly where he lives as he met me in it. Think he's a detailer as he did know his stuff when it came to keeping the car looking nice. What do you reckon the cars life has been like then. Btw I didn't mean any offence when I said clueless, it's just with impreza you kind of expect the owners to be enthusiasts who have spent time learning about their machines.

Roughly how old is the seller?
(Don't want to generalise but an older person probably bought the car more for its reputation than performance, so perhaps wouldn't know about - or use - all features. A younger one might have ragged it about on weekends or whatever).
How many owners?
If it's only done 21K I'd be wary if there were more than about 3.
(People buy cars to use them, even if it isn't very often, such as a weekend toy, so I'd expect it to have been a dd for at least one person. An average of 7k per owner (if there has been 3) isn't a lot, especially over 7 years.
Are all the owners in the same region?
Car could have been part-ex'd locally.
It's a long way to go (anywhere) from Aberdeen to pick up a car (no disrespects).
Above all - have you asked the owner all about it?
Did they have all/some/any of the mods done?
Why are they selling?
This sounds to me like a car that could have been done up from new (from dealer straight to AF perhaps ?), first owner flogged it after a year (or perhaps at 3) and someone who 'fancied a special' picked it up, not really knowing what it was all about.
I know some of these questions have been suggested and as you can see the answers will help paint a picture so you can make your own mind up.
Btw what's the asking price?
(Usual reason - you should salt a bit away in case of kaboom!, so price should be negotiated accordingly).

There was a bloke in the Wales section called Black Hawk and the description sounds very much like his old Impreza that he sold a while ago. I'm not sure he's on here now and I personally don't know him, but it looked a stunning machine.

Aye that's John's car
Well i can tell you that bodywork wise it's been very well looked after, any stone chips or imperfection's get sorted properly. Only know him as hes good mate's with one of the lads from the body shop that does all the work on my Scoob. Got speaking to him and had a good look round.
Front bumper got resprayed recently ( Due to stone chips, and im talking tiny little barely noticeable ones )
Alloys recently painted. a few weeks ago as well , were white before hand
Underneath is clean, and properly wax-oiled . It was above my scoob on the lift at Kintore Auto-body
He certainly does look after the car, Drive's it off boost till it's warmed up and isn't the type to Chav around. Of course it does get "used" but by no means is he the sort of lad to risk damage unnecessarily. Treat's it like his baby IMO
Youngish lad about mid 20's, Self employed valeter/detailer.
Quite disappointed really, Was promised a shot not long ago. Ill no doubt see him kicking about again.
If i had the money i would go for it, bit steep for me , but certainly worth it in my opinion, see similar ones go for this sort of price with less spec so to speak.
Worth giving Andy Forrest a shout as he will let you know more on the mapping/running side of things

Spoke to him and his mate actually when the car had white Rotas instead. Very clean car. Looks nice and from what he was saying its spent most of its life in a bodyshop being sprayed as he's fussy.
On the other hand. Him and his mate were clueless about Subaru's. Gobbled mainly sh1te that never made sense. I took him with a pinch of salt if I'm honest. Tried telling me about my Type R to which none of it was correct.
Nice car none the less.

Why can't people own cars they know naff all about what it boils down to is £££ some have so much they just buy the car they like the look of and drive it but they also spend a fortune on maintenance because they know nothing. In a way it's probably better to buy one like this, on the other hand people that know won't pay joe blogs down the road to service it fit mods etc put it this way guy that knows nothing has coilovers fitted at a named garage who should performe vehicle tracking guy that knows how to use a spanner will fit the coilovers himself then forget about the tracking already you have one car that's done rite the other is only halfway there.
I never believe the seller I take the car buy face value I check everything I look at what I need to look at and if it's straight and works as it should I will hand the cash over I've been known not to even look at the service history as long as the car looks like its been treated with some respect remember don't buy one of these cars if you think it's never been ragged because 99.9% of them have seen some abuse at some point.

At the end of the day, go with your gut feeling.
If you feel that your are being taken for a fool then walk away. BUT you may well live to regret it!
Sounds like a great car and looks stunning Maybe go have another look and take a mechanic with you that knows Subaru's, but not someone who knows the seller
