answered my own question... :/
VCAR = vehicle condition alert register
V-Car means the car has been an insurance write-off at some point during it's life.
This could through an accident, theft and recovery or flooding.
There are four categories.
Category A (Worst) : Example: a burned out shell, CANNOT be put back on the road.
Category B : Example: Very bad accident damage, car CANNOT be put back on the road but parts can be re-used.
Category C : Example : Severe accident damage, car CAN be put back on the road.
Category D : Example : Theft Recovery/Flooding/minor/moderate accident damage, car CAN be put back on the road.
Unless you know the history of this car down to the last bolt or you are desperate for a cheap car whatever problems may be lurking, my advice would be to walk away...............

Just a quick add-on - some Cat C and D's are write-offs as 'uneconomic to repair' often because of expensive brand-new parts. If you're sure of the reason for write-off and are prepared to use second-hand parts then you could get a bargain, although of course the eventaul selling price would have to be lowered to reflect the car's history.
Coincidentally one of my mates showed me a photo of his latest car on the weekend.
An 04 Skyline.
All it needs is a nearside door, the current one being crumpled where a tractor's weights hit it side on reversing out of a field.
Well, it needs a door.
He needs $1,100 to ship a second hand one (costing I think he said $1,800) from the States.
No wonder it was "uneconomic to repair".

Don't touch it with a bargepole, there are plenty of other examples for sale that won't come with all the potential hassle of a VCAR vehicle. It's not like they rarely come up for sale and rarity is the only reason I would ever consider a vehcile on the VCAR!
When was it damaged ???
