Default newbie just joined

hi, im sean, just joined, and don't have a Scooby at the moment but looking to get one. not familiar with the site layout, so not even sure if this is in the right place.
don't want to sound stupid, but with my questions hopefully answered, I may be able to afford to run one.

I had a 95 m plate wrx, 310 bhp back in 2006, purchased on a wim, not knowing what to expect other than it being fast. as soon as the log book came it was sold, could not keep up with 15mpg.

im now finding myself wanting another, but it has to be a classic shape one.
am I better buying a turbo 2000 or a wrx?
what sort of mpg can I expect from a standard well serviced car as most of my journeys are short, couple of miles at tops.

ive just got rid of a 3ltr Vectra b which was doing 22mpg with my regular driving style, or 24.5mpg if mega carefull.

apart from rust and oil leaks, bottom end knocking and white smoke from exhaust is there anything else to look out for.

other than a nice sounding exhaust I want to keep the car standard. I am not interested in getting one with large bhp, I think for what I would use it for standard power is plenty. I have also read recently about a closed deck block, (this being stronger than the usual weak bottom end?) what cars came with them?
any models to go for, or to avoid? I have a max of £2500 for the right car, and its got to be white.

as much advice as possible would be appreciated.
thanks

Tbh I recon you might be struggling to find a decent classic for 2.5k (although in the run up to Xmas you never know if someone needs the cash) I looked for a decent classic for ages with 3k budget and ended up buying a 5k blob eye lol.

If you struggled with the consumption in 2006 mate you will struggle more now. My car is running 300bhp ish and needs to take trip to rehab with the drinking of fuel issue, apart from that I love the car. I reckon a standard uk one will be a tad better in fuel but if you mod fuel consumption will drop. These cars are old so do the usual checks and keep your fingers crossed. Good luck mate

thanks..... as said I could cope with 22mpg with my 3ltr vec, so im hoping a standard Scooby will be around the same. the one I had back in 06, to be fair I did give it some stick, on boost just about everywhere. I know some will say, there designed to be driven fast/ hard, but apart from the look and the unmistakable sound, im not wanting to up the performance, id be quite happy with standard uk spec power. I get to drive fast at work......legally

I get 26-29 just pottering around town in my 05 wrx. I only live 3 miles from work though which helps. 20p per mile is roughly what it costs to run, so work it out on that.

But, if the difference in 2-3mpg is making you question whether to buy on or not, then the Impreza is not for you. Things can be very expensive when they go wrong.

Think carefully!

ok, fuel aside, what sort of costs are we looking at, eg, cambelt done? or a clutch? not at main dealer though.

Cambelt - £200 - £300
Clutch - £500 to £600

A lot depends if you buy your own parts.
