Default THAT knock when lifting off the gas

I fixed mine tonight, despite reading gigabytes worth of forum posts saying it's "normal" for the Subaru rear differentials.

Basically at slow speed, if I let go of the gas and coast, I feel/hear a clunk coming from the rear as the transmission "takes the load".

I fixed it tonight with new hubnuts all round, obviously it was one of the rear ones which made a difference - but they obviously had come loose slightly overtime and it was giving the driveshafts space to move under load.

4 new nuts for £20ish inc delivery for Subaru genuines, jobs a good un'

Well worth sharing I thought, as it annoyed me for quite some time.

2005 STI for reference, but I think it's common across most Imprezas.

I have a similar noise coming from the pass rear side. Just had both rear shocks greased and basically on my 04 blob eye sti. It's an intermittent issue and I can't always repeat it but when very gently on the gas and then I let go of the gas pedal, after 1 second after releasing it, I can hear what sounds like 1 click.

One of the screws holder the rear back box heat shield has come lose but I don't think it's this. The car has just come back from Rich Fb Tunning and has had all diff and gear box oils changed.

When you mean hub nuts, I take it you mean the alloy wheel nuts?

Regards.

No mate the big 32mm bolt which holds the hub to the axle. Give it a try, you may need new nuts though as they're bent into shape to stop them coming off.

It's the big nut in the middle of this picture:

You can see where the nut is bent into the recess to stop it coming off, you may need to unbend that but I managed to whiz them off with a rattlegun.

I changed all four... because I'm **** about completing a full set At £6 each from Import Car Parts... why not.

http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/part...var=0&dc=&gen=

Will fit any Subaru I believe, mine is a widetrack so definitely will fit yours.

Hi. Believe me or not but I want to start a thread asking for same thing :-)
Exactly same click/clunk noise somewhere from the rear. Only when going really slow and taking foot of acceleration pedal. My thoughts were either a prop shaft or differential but never thought about hub nuts.

Thanks a lot mate. Will try to tighten them up first and if nothing change will replace them as you did.

I hope it works for you, nice cheap thing to try anyway tbh.

Mine didn't look obviously loose, so I was skeptical right up until the test drive.

IIRC 185nm is what I found on NASIOC somewhere, so torqued them up to that... then battered them with the rattlegun one more time

Fantastic - I have had this exact issue for the last year or so. It became noticeable after I fitted whiteline uprated rear diff bushings.
Thank you for posting - I'm ordering the hub nuts right now for that price!!

Haven't got the problem on mine, but that's something I have not heard of before.

Thanks for sharing!

i take it once you replaced them, you used something to put the notch into the nut?

Kwan,
It's dead easy mate. Just jack the car up with handbrake fully applied, take the wheel off and tighten those nuts up ! All you need is 32mm socket and torque wrench if you have one.

I'd help if you were close, but it really is a non-issue. I admit though my rattlegun made it a piece of cake to whizz the old one off.

kwan,
I'll bet if you go to any garage with 4 pack of beer they'll do it for you :-) It will take about 10 mins with the car in the air.
As above, if you were closer I'm more than happy to help you buddy.
