Default Bonnet part alternative?

What is the protection layer attached to the underside of the bonnet called?

I have been advised not to remove it due to the temperatures generated by the engine. Also are there any alternatives to the OEM one as mine is like sawdust & what do you use please?

Thanks for any help/advice given.

Won't cause issues, seen many cars without no effects, there are a few heat resistant fabrics you could use if you wanted something there.

Wonder if it can cause paint to flake due to temperature?

Thanks for the replies so far

Does anyone know of any alternatives other than removing it?

Try a place called Nimbus Motorsport for all kinds of heat shields, barriers etc. pull it out and replace with new.

http://www.nimbusmotorsport.com/index.asp

For the record you'll be fine without it.
