Default Blob radiator drain tap

Hi. I am planning a coolant change today, and have read elsewhere on SN that the rad drain tap sometimes fails to reseal after opening. I was planning to do the change on the drive, from above, and would prefer to use the tap rather than undo the lower hose, which seems quite inaccessible from above. What are people`s opinions?
On another note, is there a recommended flush apart from tap water, as the water is very hard here, and I have noticed calcium buildup on the expansion tank pipe.
Thanks,
Hedge
