Default Recommend me a quick spool turbo upgrade!

I'm looking to run about 330bhp on an my00 classic turbo. I love the quick spool of the td04 although it lacks real power.
Is there a turbo that will spool quickly & still deliver around 320-330bhp?
Thanks in advance

SC36 Billet,if your going to buy a pretty expensive turbo you might as well future proof and get a turbo that will spool up quick but give you that little bit extra when you get use to the 330 bhp.its the same principle with injectors.Modifying does not come cheap so always try to make good decisions or it will cost you more later.SJ.

+1

If you can afford it, never replace like with like.
Upgrades are better than repairs and even if you can't use the extra straight away you're partway to the next upgrade.

Spare capacity is always a good thing.

Ive not set a definitive budget but anywhere between £250 to £750 max for the right turbo & that way I should have enough for my intercooler upgrade, up-pipe & map tweak. I would also have my oe one to sell on top to claw some cash back (though I'm not sure how much it would fetch)

With that budget, your in the 2nd hand market.

Best bet would be to go for the VF range of turbos, look for a newage STI being broken, plenty on here both private and those being broken by companies. should pick one for £250-350

With regards to your old turbo, it's worth next to nothing. In fact I weighed my old in, as there simply isn't a market for them

Had you of mentioned your budget I would not of specified the SC36 turbo as even second hand it would be over your budget,as DB007 has said your only option really is the second hand market but that's not really a bad thing as there is always good deals to be had, just keep your eyes on the parts section you might just be lucky. The VF range of turbos are quality units and can be had for good money and will fit in nicely with your target BHP figure.SJ.

hybrid td04 might be worth considering bud. quick spool like the standard 04 but doesnt run out of puff at the top end like the normal td04. andy forrest does them for £450 on exchange for your old one and are good for 320 bhp according to andys website. a set of 440,s if you dont already have them as well to give headroom on injector duty.

No probs thanks for advice mate. I could probably stretch further on my budget but then I would have to sacrifice other mods. Plus at the end of the day it's a uk turbo so not worth throwing a load of money at it. Think I'll take a look at the vf35 or vf28 or similar.

Remember to factor in the £550 mapping price.

Id find a nice td05 16g for about £150, add a newage wrx intercooler, panel filter, walbro pump and de-cat system. Add on the mapping and its all achievable for under a grand with end results somewhere around 320bhp and quick spool.

Matty, I think I may have not explained properly but I'm willing to spend upto £750 max just on the turbo. My current mods are a full turbo back 3 inch decat revolution system & EcuTek map (so it will need just a map tweak?). It's already got stopping power as I've upgraded to brembos front & rear so just need some extra power to make use of the brakes!

Obviously I would prefer to spend less than 750 so if I can bag a hybrid td04 or vf35 on the cheap that's a preferential route. What is the td05 20g like in comparison to the td04?

£750 would get you a twin scroll setup of a newage sti which will spool as good as your tdo4 with a lot more power

Thanks mate. What supporting mods would I need for this twin scroll? Would I need a specific up-pipe? I'm looking at purchasing one of Harvey's (rip) trick up-pipes but I think they're tailored for different turbos rather than generic one fits all? Have I got that right or am I talking rubbish?!
Cheers

Ok cool, thought you were starting from a standard car.

Another thing to think about is max power your willing to push your old standard engine too. An SC36 or 20G are beyond your limits in my opinion.

I'd go with my first idea, a nice 16G is a good upgrade and won't stress your car to much. Either that or one of Andy's td04's or his 16G

Cheers mate. I'll take a look. I think I will side with either a hybrid td04 or a td05 or possibly a vf28...too much choice!

On my last Scoob, a MY00 Uk Classic, I had both a Vf 28 and a Vf 35. Would recommend the Vf 35 . Minimal lag and more top end power than Vf28. Steve.

How much power are we talking?? I'm looking at either a vf35 or maybe a td05-18g next. I'm looking for the mid to high 300's...

I've decided I'm going for a td04 hybrid. As I'm looking for a quick spool & about 320 bhp tops. Plus it's a daily driver so I want to retain some driveability in & around town but also have some go for when the need arises!

Not a bad choice sir, it will transform your car.

Keep saving though as you'll soon be bored of 320

Cheers Steve. Thats what im currently getting from my vf28. Im looking for more like the high 300's but all depends on driveability. I dont want anything that takes too long to hit full boost as it'll be useless on the road.

I'll get my 550's fitted and the alcatek mapped and see how i go with that.......
