Default 400BHP on a top mount?

http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classif.../sti?logcode=p

Seller reckons top mounts are good for 500bhp as well!

Shame because it looks like a motor. I just wish people wouldn't bullsh*t about the power.

(Monday rant over!)

Think you might struggle to get 400bhp on a classic airbox too

I am looking for a nice classic again so I sent him a message asking if the power is more likely to be around 330-340bhp (what I understand to be the limit of the classic top mount). He responded saying that he has seen many imprezas running 500bhp on standard top mounts. He also said it was running a SC40 TD18G turbo.
Aren't these two completely different units?

At that point I decided to look elsewhere.

You would get close to 400 on an newage STi top mount, but not on that.

As above, standard airbox would be the limiting factor before you started to worry the IC anyway.

Does appear to be in decent condition for its age though.

Standard airbox works fine on a CS 400 and the 400+bhp Litcho hatch. But agree beyond that and the suction would eat the panel filter.

I believe the Classic inlet is more restrictive than the Newage set-up and that is what would contribute to any limitations on airflow and ultimate BHP attained.

Standard top mounts are for pikeys.
Why would you build a 400bhp car with a top mount??
Might as well run wrx brakes too.

Funny you should say that because it looks like it has 2 pot sliders on the front.

Having said that, the car is a V3 by the looks of it. Thought that should have the better front brakes....

The effectiveness of the OE intercoolers varies throughout the years. The early 93-96 slanty type will limit power to around 310 bhp whilst the 99-00 can run to around 330 bhp. The STI MY01 onwards is capable of over 450bhp with an appropriately sized turbo

Yeah, i think you can get 420-430 from the Hawk sti top mount if its only for short bursts of power (road car) rather than held on boost for long periods (track car).

So, back to my original question - no you can't get 400bhp on a standard classic top mount!

Yeah the stock TMICs aren't good for over 350WHP better yet nothing over 22 psi from a turbo either.. If the design was a bit more strong like welded end tanks it would hold up to higher psi turbos.

I was coming in here unsure of the actual topic since I am pushing 380 WHP on an Extreme Turbo Systems TMIC and I need more fuel to get my setup to 450 WHP which will just about max out the turbo I'm running.

You can get 600+WHP out of a TMIC if you run meth injection to keep temps down.

Having spoken in reasonable depth with Cosworth's development partner about the upgrades available they basically said that the three big issues with getting the original power out of the car involved the air box, turbo and TMC - Subaru wanted these to remain as standard as possible for servicing reasons. Which is why the proposed upgrade will basically be uprating these and then the crank.

So how that chap reckons a '96 classic manages 400bhp with that tiddler of an intercooler is quite beyond me!

Don't want to be pedantic but it wouldn't be "brake" horse power if its at the wheels. The "brake" in BHP comes from the device called a crank brake used to measure the power at the crank.

If you had a big enough meths tank in the boot and a large enough injection system, in theory you could get 1000bhp with no intercooler at all ..... but its not exactly practical is it!
