Are these repairs too cheap?
A mate had his VW clouted by a truck the other day.
For various reasons he isn't going through insurance. The quote came in at £800 + VAT. Any one think that is a fair price? Or possible even too cheap for the work that needs doing?

yeah i thought so too. My guess before he got the quote was £2k+
You can see the quarter panels door latch has popped out and is visible, I reckon there is a shed load of work.
The quoted £500 labour, £150 of paint, £150 of parts - guess that's just a lot of filler!

From the picture the door frame will be buckled so it's wothout doubt a new door frame, then a new door skin.
The quarter panel has been creased that hard on the door shut line that it's opened up from what I can see so again no doubt a new quarter panel needed.
From the prices you have just posted it's defo just a skin they intend on getting and maybe the inner door cover strip that covers over the retaining bolts for the door skin which looks mangled in the picture also.
I'd steer well clear imo!

I reckon about 13-15 hrs of labour is required. Removing parts, hanging and aligning a new door frame, cutting out and welding in a new 1/4, plus small repair to the front door too + painting.
So labour figure doesn't appear too far out of, but it def needs a new rear door and 1/4

I would say its cheap. We would charge £1200+ I have a smart and bodyshop background, if it was my car/mates car. I would use a second hand door (same colour so i don't need to paint the inside door) I would pull the rear arch and re-shape, but the metal will have stretched so it will need to be bodyfiled/ hammer and dolled to remove materials, hopefully not to use much filler/putty. Most of the side will need base coat and I would clear most of the side and mop.

I echo most of the above.
Unlike most cars. The door skins on MK5 Golfs just bolt onto the door frame. So its easy to think its just a straight swap of skins.
The problem is the brackets on the skin are glued into place with adhesive and are supplied separate to the skin (well, they are on the front doors ), so if a brand new skin is acquired the brackets need to be glued exactly in place...not easy if the door frame has been bent...and the frames usually do bend Anyway the area round the door lock look fubarred, so its an entire new door.
The question if the door catch has been damaged may need to be addressed. Genuine VW door locks are around one hundred quid last time I fitted one ( VAG group central locking motors fail quite regular, which are part of the door catch). There are ebay specials for less than £50, but they are cheaper for a reason IMO.
Obviously rear quarter is straighten, cut out and replace. Nothing too complex, but can easily be fecked up by someone cutting corners.
Filler, prep and spray of course costs money...paint ain't cheap anymore....cost me best part of £500 just to respray the side of my car, the majority of that was the cost was the paint. The only labour paid was the rub down, paint and polish...as it was just correcting a poor chips away repair around the door handle (surface scratches...no filler) which was blended by Stevie Wonder. Side of the car was done to get a perfect match and avoid blotching which titan silver had a bad habit of doing at the the time.
