Missing Dog, Reading / M4 area Sunday May 26
Hi,
Any ScoobyNet users near Reading??? Our dog Bates has gone missing, from the Moto-Reading services on the Eastbound M4 near Junction12. He was last seen at 1300 on Sunday May 26th. He is a dark brindle one year old Staffie cross, looks like a typical Staff only taller. He is neutered and microchipped. He is shy and a little wary but not at all aggressive and responds really well to offers of food. He is wearing a green 'Hurtta' harness and a brown collar with his name and our contact details. Local vets near Reading are aware, as is the national RSPCA helpline 0300 1234 999. If you think you've seen him please call that number. We'd be very grateful if those near Reading would pass this info on to friends and neighbours in the area. Thank you.
Luke

Thank you for the support Stu. Some optimistic news: Bates was spotted around 1900 heading north along the Avon and Kennet Canal near Burghfield Golf Course.

Sorry to hear he's missing mate.
Sounds like you're doing all you can.
I've got 2 cockers and one went missing recently.
Family search party couldn't find him.
He was found by a pensioner who rung us from his collar details.
Probably lucky coz the old folk don't see too well - maybe a photo of him and your number on all lamp posts near the golf course and the old peoples favourite hang out, bus stops?
Large font.
Hope you get him back mate.

Thank you. As per advice, posters have been printed and we're back in the local area to recommence the search. As Bates is a shy lad he will probably avoid Reading to the north, so hopefully he is holed up somewhere safe waiting for us.
Thanks
Luke

Great news: after 40 solid hours of searching, and after many sightings in the area, our dog Bates has been found safe and well. He's a little scratched and grazed, a few little cuts and the odd tick, but he's now on his way home. Thank you to everyone who posted up or passed this on.
Thanks
Luke

He's just settling back in, licking his wounds and having some food and lots of affection. He's a bit freaked out he didn't go far. Luckily he is a shy lad and doesn't like noise so hung back from the motorway. We're aware this could have been a proper disaster.
As well as everyone at the services and in the local area, who were absolutely lovely even helping look for him, I'd really like to thank the staff at the website DogLost:
www.DogLost.co.uk
They are a charity and rely on donations, we will definitely contribute: without the knowledge and advice of their area coordinator, I don't think we'd have got him back.
Thanks
Luke

Thanks everyone for the concern, the support and a laugh or two. He's settled back in now, after a long kip and a couple of bowls of food he's back to himself which is lovely.
As to how he got loose, he is a rescue and relatively unsocialised. With that in mind since we got him in Jan we have worked extensively on his recall, and believe it or not he's actually very good. We were on a day out with family, my partner left him for just a moment with my dad and sister who are relatively new to him. Bates did something he'd never do with us, started tearing round the car park, taking the mick and having a wonderful laugh at their expense as they tried to catch him. They didn't know to tell him off, but eventually he tore off into some woods and was gone.
Rehoming a rescue dog has been massively rewarding: seeing his confidence grow is amazing. However the flip side is that now his playful nature is at the fore, so when he spied a chance to 'take the pi*ss' with my dad and sister he took it. Little bugger :-(
Thanks
Luke
