Rebuild
Hi guys,
After loads of research here and other Subaru sites in the Uk and abroad I have come to the conclusion......
The general consensus seems to be that buying a scooby (classic) with a proven engine rebuild is the only way to go. No matter what the service history and mileage is, a knock can develop at any time without a rebuild.?

Buy a good one with service history and look after it.

I agree, it doesn't necessarily have to have had a rebuild, mechanically they are a very reliable car, they just tend to fall into the hands of people without any mechanical sympathy so end up getting ragged from cold and not serviced correctly. Get one with a good history from either a reputable forum member or dealer and you wont have any problems.
If you buy a cheap one then yes, expect to get problems, but that's the same with all cars.

I also must agree.
Recently sold my MY99 Classic with 149k on the clock, oil changes every six months and never hammered until engine fully warmed up nor switched off immediately after a hard drive.
Owned for five years and never missed a beat as I put over 70k on the clock with a daily 60 mile commute.
The one time it let me down was the fuel pump immobiliser with the Sigma alarm which I believe was a common problem with that year of Impreza.
Maybe I was just lucky but I have only positive things to say about Classics.
Moved over to a different animal altogether, an E46 M3, but still miss the burble.
