Default Road Tax up again after the recent budget

We've been stealthily kicked in the wallet again:

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

There was no mention of this at the time of the budget, but just I've checked how much it is for six months on the Blob and it's gone up from £148.50 last year to £154.00 now, or £280 per year from £270.

It looks like the old £470 per year for post-23rd March 2006 cars is up to £490 too.

Marvellous.

The only ray of hope is that a few years back, over zealous civil servants imposed the increase when in fact the Chancellor hadn't raised it. I remember getting something like a £5 refund on my motorbike tax as I'd been overcharged. I'll bet that hasn't happened this time though.

I get the feeling, having seen more governments come and go than many of those on here have had hot dinners, that because they were voted in, polititions assume the public is thicker and more gullible than they are.
A big thing is made of NOT putting up petrol tax, saying they are REDUCING petrol duty. This is of course a blatent lie as you can only reduce something if you actually take something away and of course, they're not!
The extra £10 on road tax for those paying £270 currently, is the equivelent of putting the 3p petrol duty hike on 333 litres of fuel or just over 73 gallons. For the average Impreza driver averaging 22mpg that's 1615 miles
But then again, if they had put the 3p on a litre they would still have increased road tax as well!

My main car is a Mazda RX-8, tax group M so £490 for a year or £269.50 for 6 months. Ridiculous!

I think annual mileage should definitely have an impact on tax paid, I do less that 5k miles per year so it seems a lot of money to pay in tax, someone with a lower group found 12k miles per year is going to release a lot more emissions that me!
