Default spec d or p1???

hey all its been a while since ive been here, after doing my bike test and selling my 1996 sti ive decided i want a fast car again. i currently have a 2008 ktm superduke and two dealers have given me offers...

firstly a p1
its a w reg 2002, 155k with a full main dealer rebuild at 89k, completely standard, wants my bike and 650 quid, (asking 5k)

second is a 2006 spec d, 75k with clutch cambelt and head gasket done at 65k. remapped uprated downpipe surpposedly running 340bhp. he wants 2grand on top... (asking 6500) this option is do-able but will skint me for a few months...

im a bit torn, i like the idea of the stealth spec d but love the p1's...

should i do a deal or just wait and sell my bike above the trade price which they are offering of around 4500k, prob sell for 5k if i wait...

which should i do or should i wait, i like golf r32's aswell!? help!-)

P1 won't be 2002 chap, also not worth that sort of money with those miles.

Sell your bike privately and then search for a type r.

ok people, i was looking at type r's aswell... p1 had a rebuild with all the reciepts tho, how much is it worth then? spec d is nice, like the idea of a stealth sti... maybe i should wait and sell the bike and see whats around, gonna be very tempting to get a mk4 or 5 golf r32 tho... or a gts-t... or evo 5 lol!

Rebuilt 65K ago, that doesn't really help its value in my opinion. The rest of the car has still covered 155K remember.
Id want to be giving 4 grand max, once youve had it for a while and put 15/20K on it you'll really struggle to sell it. But in all honesty I wouldn't even entertain a 155K P1 unless it was uber cheap.
Id take the spec D over the P1, R32 or the others your toying with. Maybe see if you can negotiate a better deal, £1500 and your bike would be a nice touch.

no, like i say i had a 96 sti so i gather the p1 would be similar, surely the spec d wouldnt be dissapppoimting.. right? obviously if it got to a deal stage i'd have a test drive before anything was on paper.

My friend just picked up a 51k mile P1 for £5k, so a 155k mile one for the same money is well overpriced.

Ok the p1/type r's are imo differ to the sti but yes are similar.

The Newage sti's on the other hand are very different. They are more refined and are heavier so need more power to feel as nimble as the lighter classics. The weight is also from the waste up if that makes sense so feel a little top heavy. Imo they feel more stable which in turn gives you more confidence to push harder.

Depends on what you want it to do, the classic in standard form will be more "fun" over the Newage sti for a evening blast and weekend play to but it's far more comfortable and a nicer place to sit on a day to day life. All imo obviously.

Hence my question have you driven them as you may love the Spec d and hate the p1, they are the same make but in my book are very different cars to drive so i would suggest test driving both and you may find you have your answer.

Also with that mileage on the p1 I wouldn't even both with it ok the engine has been rebuilt yet the car has covered high miles and is not worth that money in my book. They are charging a premium as it's a p1.

Drive both see what YOU prefer and go from there

Best of luck

He bought it from a friend how just wanted it gone, so did get it very cheap.

A £5k P1 is going to be a dog TBH (with the exception of the above of course)

It might be cheap to buy, but you'll spend a fortune on it.
Gearbox will be comining towards to the end of its life, and the wheels bearings/bushes will probably need replacing soon.

I agree, the transmission will be an unknown financial liability at this mileage.

It may be my age but I'd have to say the Spec D all day long as an all round everyday proposition. It may not deliver the raw thrills of a classic but it will be more of the car you want more of the time, if that makes sense!

I wouldn't entertain paying that for a high mileage p1. Spec d a better bet. Or get a lower mileage p1 or even type r. U will have to weigh up how much a car will cost u 2 maintain

If you want a lower mileage P1 try this one

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...e-for-30k.html

There is a huge difference between the two cars you'll need to try them both. The Spec D is definitely a better car to own and drive day to day. I had a Spec D thought it was great but preferred the Blob STi I owned afterwards.

But that P1 is well overpriced for a mileage of 155k.

He has a point though, you can buy a better type r per £ than you can a P1.
£6000 would buy a stunning R with pretty tasty spec whereas you would get an average P1 for the same money.

+1 on the type r if it's a classic your after, and it's more of a play thing, if your going to be clocking up the miles then i'd go newage, i'd also say don't buy any one of the cars if you don't have a bit of spare cash about the place as both can cost a few quid to maintain.

Matty that I appreciate has some truth about it but from my memory a same plate/year type r to p1 will cost the same money. Yes the older type r's can be had for 6k or below but a 99-00 version 6 type r will cost 6-8k same as the p1 and have as much chance if having the engine rebuilt, uprated brakes and remap etc. So unless you really really want the dccd and two pot rear brakes there's not that much in them. For me the p1 was set up extremely well for the uk roads and having that limited run makes it a goer from for me hence owning two.

I was more interested in why the poster made the statement. Based on what reason, be it car for money, experience etc. How may people on here have had the pleasure to drive both who can offer experience of the two. Just throwing a statement of "buy a type r" with no reason is pointless if you don't state why and is miss leading

And as I've said a few times both the p1 and spec d are very different cars to drive and own. Good luck drive both and see what you like.
