Default Dead engine!

Well today I found out what's wrong with my engine.

After my engine went at Spa before Christmas this is the report from David at API.

It's not that bad

The report

The engine was seized solid and we have had a nightmare to actually get it to pieces. From the heads down there is nothing salvageable it was certainly working hard when it gave up the ghost.

The main bearings have spun in their locations in the block and ruined the block beyond use.

The big ends have done a similar thing and ruined the rods.

The pistons are seized in the bores.

The oil pump is full of debris.

The valves have poor seating in the heads and the heads need a full overhaul [ part of the job anyway. ]

"Can I have a quote on that"

Sure can, buffing is £5 an hour - should take about 20 minutes. The problem is the cost of the polish.

circa £5 grand a jar........... tricky to polish a turd.

No, the turbo is ok. I'm not sure if the pump was the culprit or just a victim, David would know better but I'd guess due to the state of the engine it'd be difficult to tell for certain.

David is building a 2.1 for me.

Really the engine starved of oil but the turbo didn't that does surprise me I must say but I suppose if your going 2.1 maybe a new blower is on the cards I know I wouldn't want to strap that turbo on a fresh build

The engine is a mess, but there is no sign of oil starvation in the heads or cams, so the turbo oil supply was never compromised. The failure seems to be oil starvation through surge, as all Boxer Subaru engines suffer from terrible oil surge on long fast right handers.

'All' the oil disappears out into the nearside head and struggles to get back. That eventually exposes the oil pick up pipe to air and at 6000 rpm plus [ or any revs really ] the bearings won't take a lack of oil for an instant. Don't forget that at 6000 rpm the engine is rotating at 100 times a SECOND Even at 1500 rpm the engine is rotating 25 times a second.

Yeah that's for sure. we use the Cosworth type baffle plate and one way valve system Positively the best value-for-money way to do that job.
