Default best little run around for around a grand

Hi, I know this isn't the ideal place to post this but would like some oyher car enthusiasts input.

Im looking for a little, ideally diesel, run around so I dont have to feed the scooby all my money in petty, and to teach the mrs to drive (well attempt :-/)

Needs to be fairly echonomical but still a little nippy, (nothing under the equivalent of about a 1.4 Petrol else ill end up reving the **** off it to get it to move and use loads of fuel) and not priced at over about £1.5k.

Ive been looking at all sorts but cant even begin to make my mind up on what woupd be a good shout. Does anyone have any input that could help me make up my mind?

1.4 hdi peugeot 206. Bullit proof engine, £30 a year tax, 50+mpg and cheap insurance, the 1.4hdi engine also comes in the xsara, c2,c3,307 and fiesta. They a little slow but a generic map from some1 half reputable will sort it out

Just sold my Impreza as I couldn't afford two cars on one wage.

Bought a 52 plate Xsara Coupe 2.0 HDi VTR 110 for just over £1,300. Been a brilliant car so far and no dredded dpf either. The engine is very impressive and reliable, it's just people have this stigma about French cars and unreliability. 35mpg on short town journeys was ok but 62mpg on a 60mph 300 mile run over the weekend was great from a 10 year old derv.

Agreed as I've had engine failures on an Impreza STi and a Porsche 997. My dad has also seen two of his Mercs drop engines on him over the years and we have not exactly treated these cars badly either.

However I have to say that the Clio 200 Sport Cup I recently sold was dreadfully screwed together. It barely had anything in it to rattle but still managed to, and the air con failed months after I picked it up. The headlights were dreadful and the brake pads seemed to be made out of chalk. It also had a misfire in first gear on pulling away... apparently they all do that!

It was though, for the record, a cracking car on a country lane and despite the above I remember the car very fondly.

Running a Fiat Uno 1.0 at the moment as 'everyday' car. Can't remember if it was £620 or £720 on Ebay last year . . . it's red, fun to drive, hardly uses any fuel.

Took about six weeks for the right one to come along that was close enough to view.

Little Peugeot 106 or the Citroen equivalent is a good option too. I've had two 106's, petrol 1.1 and a derv 1.5. Weigh nothing so not as slow as you'd think from a piddly engine. Parts are daft cheap and common as much so cheap cars to buy.

I got a 2000 X plate Focus 1.8 TDDI back in September i paid £1500 for it from a dealership with a months warranty..two owners from new and just 72K miles on the clock, 12months MOT and a couple of months VED

i have done 15K miles in 6 months and its been a great little car...average around 52/53 MPG but i have had 60+ from it.

Paid £850 for my mk3 golf 1.9tdi with 38k on the clock (was owned by an old boy). Hasn't missed a beat, does around 50mpg on a run and parts are readily available. Tax at £220 for a year is only downside

Id say buy something with a mechanical diesel engine. Much less to go wrong. Ive got an old escort van. Not the best drive in the world. Infact gutless. But just keeps going and going with very little maintanence. Usefull for those rubbish runs to the tip and so on.
