Default Help me to locate strange sound from Engine...

Hello there, when the engine is cold i have this little "knocky" sound from somewhere in the egine... i have just recorder 2 small videos, one when its cold and one when its been driven for 30 min.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtBOX...ature=youtu.be

Thats the Vid of where its cold.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z80B...ature=youtu.be

And Here is one after ive driven it for 30mins.

Bought the car from a imports vendor and he claims that the engine has been rebuilt before it came to Sweden with new bearings pistons etc...
Since the rebuild the engine has gone about 2500 miles.

Should i expect a total failure anytime or does it sound okay?

best regards!

Cold start vid certainly sounds like piston slap. Second vid makes it sound as if there is still some slap when warm.
Were forged pistons used in the re-build? If so, audible slap is common when cold as more clearance is allowed for these pistons. If it's still there when warm it could be that the piston/bore clearance was excessive at the time of building.

I dont know if forged pistons were used, He say that they used Forged pistons and aftermarket rods, but i dont know what to believe until ive seen it myself , but soon the summer is here and i dont wanna put it to pieces now...

So lets pretend its OEM stuff would that piston slap be critical to my engine or is it fine?

Agree with JohnD above - piston slap from cold and you can just hear it when you have the engine up to temperature. If it was built with forged pistons, then the noise should go when warm - maybe a slightly 'generous' piston to bore clearance for the type of pistons fitted.
Provided there is no excessive oil comsumption or blow-by, then I wouldn't worry too much.
If it has OEM cast pistons and not been rebuilt, then it's quite common for the 1997~8 Impreza's to suffer from piston slap.

Okay i see , the engine doesent "drink" any oil at all and is running perfectly fine and have no other issues! actually always feels very healthy

Just that little knocky sound that has been my only "issue"

Thanks alot

Piston slap mate.Wouldnt worry about it at all.
You can sometimes hear a bit of slap even with a warm engine if you listen hard enough.
Ive owned numerous scoobs with varying levels of slap and never had a problem. The first time i heard it on one it had me worrying, but many years later i realise its nowt to worry about.
As long as it drives well and doesnt drink oil just enjoy your motor

Got the same on mine. Ignore it on cold but if I REALLY REALLY listen a gently press the throttle I can hear it when warm, bugs the crap outta me! I've been told and I've read so many times it's nowt to worry about but it still bugs me. Buying an Afterburner Raptor to replace the standard exhaust and I shouldn't hear it after that .
