The lower the number the more the wheel sticks out. ET22 will stick out more than ET45. It is how much the hub of the wheel is 'offset' from the centreline.

This should explain it for you mate

The important thing for brake clearance is not the offset, but the shape of the spokes

Correct

You can aid this problem by buying a higher than required ET which brings it closer to the struts and fitting spacers to centralise the wheel. But in some wheel makes it still won't make any difference.

And remember to keep the wheel width constant when looking at ET because as soon as you make the rim wider the ET alters, so if looking at new wheels work out what width you want, then go looking at how much you want it to stick out (et).

What annoys me is wheel width is in inches and ET is in mm!

I'm not so sure you have, I think you need to read my quote again, the one which T5NYW requited

What KEV said is 100% correct the offset is there to maintain the centre of the wheel in line with the car manufacture hub load centre. Different width wheels on the same hub will require different ets to maintain hub load centre.

It's a completely different matter if a wheel hits a Brembos or not. It's nowt to do with ET

This is only an Example below although names and styles are not factual

an 18" et53 wheel Speedline super blade style wheel will not miss Brembos

an 18" et53 wheel speedline PF69 style wheel will miss Brembos

Because the spoke is shaped flatter and inner radius is smaller missing top of calliper. A more rounded radius style inside will result in it hitting.

Some makes are very close and you can add spacers to decrease the effective ET but then possibly the risk rubbing arches. And other issues like strain on bearings too short studs.

IIRC IMHO

Tony

ET only makes sense if you specify the rim width.
I run 8" rims with an ET of 44
Early Newage STI 7.5" rims are ET 53

So mine fill the arches more, and the spokes are virtually flat to miss the Brembo/AP rig.
