Default WRX STI Type R Version 5 1999 or WRX STI 03

Hey!

I'm looking at buying a scoobie for my next car!

I have the budget so money isn't really a problem for now. Im interested in either getting a WRX STI Type R Version 5 (1999) or a WRX STI (2003). I'm stuck between the two really! Any people here had any experience in driving both? Any opinions/information on either would be good!

Thanks!

I've had a 475bhp 2005 STi and now a mildy tuned V5 Type R... The MY05 was a very fast and comfortable car but prefer the Type R for steering feel and handling I'll be aiming for 380bhp with the R in the near future and that'll be plenty... for now

I'm after a fast scoobie! But I don't really like any models up from 05 plates. It will be used more as a weekend car not a everyday car! Just really like both of them, I've heard the Type r is much more fun!

Had both like Merv but I went from a 480BHP Type R to a Standard(ish) 03STI and have to say I prefer the 03STI

The Type R was very raw and alot of fun to drive but the Newage is so much more a nicer drive, you can do a 5 hour trip and get out as fresh a daisy but the Type r would make your back hurt.

the newage is better laid out inside, more comfy and feels better put together

Classic for the driver
Newage for the cruiser.

If its weekend fun then it has to be a big power classic. For a daily drive then newage wins hands down.

Broaden your search, any classic be it an early one, 4 door or late type r, all are great fun with the right spec

I currently own a V5 Type R and also had a brand new 03 STi. For me the type R is much more of a driver focused car. Both very quick, but give me the Type R anyday of the week. Buts that's just me

Had both and the type r is to me my favourite one just as a toy car, have to give it a bit more respect as it has bitten back when driving hard but then its got about 140bhp more and weighs less
As has been said if its going to be used everyday then the newage wins hands down, also on a note of how well put together, I'd say my type r is just as well put together as the blob I had

Has anyone else driven a type r? if so hows it like? Would you say even standard at 275hp are quick? Expensive to run?

Very quick out of the box, low geared and raw. with a few mods even quicker, enough to give some serious machines a hard time i kid you not.

As a toy the type r wins hands down.

300 to 350 bhp is plenty for most in a classic, and even more so in a type r, and you need to be able to drive a bit or things get messy.

The newage is a lot more forgiving of your average driver and easier to live with as a day to day car.

Personally i'd say if your new to scoobies and know nothing about working on cars then go for the newage, if your a demon on the spanners and a driving god get the type r.

Plenty of drivers have been caught out by the DCCD in the Type R/RA's, Not knowing how it works and leaving it rolled back when the weather turns nasty

Even experienced drivers coming from Uk turbos, WRX's or STI's find the back end wants to swap with the front on damp roads.

I had a blast in my old type R which was driven hard in the dry but respected in the wet
