I`m into a hard discussion with a friend of mine.
He plans to buy a RX7 of some kind with a pretty powerfull rotary engine.
I stick to my Subaru Impreza GT Turbo.

I`m wondering if you could help me turning over to the "IMpreza" side.
I need to know everything that is negative with RX7 and Mazda generaly.
I need good reasons why to by Subaru!!

Not much wrong with an RX7 but a few comments:

1 very thristy (even more than a scooby)
2 parts (i bet they are expensive)
3 servicing (dealer only i guess and expensive)
4 2wd
5 no engine breaking (rotary engine), not sure about this one though
6 more expensive to purchase reg for reg

upto 1996 only had 200 bhp.

nice looking car though and very rare.

and for the positive stuff,

1.Very light in weight
2.very quick acceleration, 0-60 4.6 sec
3.Can be tuned to give serious BHP
4.Looks nice
5.The rotary engine sounds menacing

I know of a 92 RX7 in great condition going for 11K.

I agree and I think the RX7 is a great car . He asked for negatives so I was desperately hunting round for some but all the positives you listed are quite right .

For the RX7 exclusivity and rarity is a good one as you dont see many about. Used to be like that with scoobs .

I think the RX7 is a fabulous car, and was seriously considering one before the Scoob.

I was put off by the fact that the engines are known to break frequently (think around 60K), plus there are virtually no Mazda dealers with staff trained to work on them.

They are mighty thirsty too. Think manufacturers stated MPG is 22. And Subaru say 30 mpg for the Scoob. Yeah right!

I'm sure they released a 4WD RX -7 (they're called Effini in Japan), I think with twin turbos. Cool.

i thought the later rx7s were all twin turbo

very very expensive when they go wrong

As previously stated the rotary engine is prone to failure, you have to really look after them from day one. They're thirsty but then every performance car is.

I sat in one and just didn't want to get out, fantastic driving position.

I owned a '93 RX-7 (255hp North American spec, later modded to 320hp) when I lived in Canada. It's an awesome car. Handling is very responsive with high levels of grip in the dry. IMHO, it's also the best looking car to have come out of Japan. Caveats include a harsh ride and low tolerance for novice mistakes at the limit.

New RX-7's are so small inside!!!

Went to try one last year and couldn't fit in it. . I am 6'3" however, but a car built soley for the vertically challenged in my opinion is a waste of space.

Good looking car though.

Truly a thirsty but awesome car.....

Never spotted one over here in Norway before not that strange Consider tax and insurance over here..

From what I have read, the rotary engines are very fragile, they can be damaged from detonation much more readily than a regular piston engine (not to say that detoation is not harmful to a regular piston engine).

A mate of mine has a new shape RX7 twin-turbs - nice looking car (certainly turns heads) but at the end of the day my STI-V TypeR (with no mods bar an exhaust) can still pull away from him - and thats on a straight - never mind on twisty A-B roads!
He's had RaceLogic traction control fitted which is an absolute MUST but he still can't keep up!!

The Japanese market 99 RX-7 RS is currently the most track worthy Japanese car. The Best Motoring (monthly Japanese car video) drivers have repeatedly demonstrated the RX-7's ability to outrun the NSX, Skyline GT-R, Evo VI, and Impreza STi V around the Tsukuba circuit. However, the ultra-sharp track responses do not translate to forgiving handling on real roads. Unlike the Impreza, you can't drive the RX-7 like a nutter and expect it not to bite.
