Have the chance of an engine running cp pistons and wondered how noisy they are over standard pistons,

Any info on these type of pistons would be gd

Cheers Tom

I run wossner pistons and there a little noisy when cold but soon settle down, they use a little oil compared to std pistons but its nothing major.

CP Pistons can/will be noisier in cold weather(or very cold weather),those pistons are proven and mainly CP Pistons making well known rods Carrillo

There's almost no doubt they will be noisier Tom but so will any forged piston, that's the down side to forging but when weighted against the positives its a small negative

i have cp pistons fitted, believe it or not still running them in 6 months after fitting ( only just broke the 1k miles ) . They do have a certain noise to them even after they up to temp, tbh i dont notice them much anymore you get used to them. Engine is currently using zero oil which id pretty much expect for how far its done

If you want quiet forged pistons, go for Supertech, which are remarkably quiet. That said, even they will be noiser than OEM when cold. If I understand it correctly, it's as much to do with the clearances run as the piston's themselves per se. Forged pistons run larger clearances, hence more noise, especially when cold!

Its worth it, every noise i heard in my old 2.5 engine i thought it was about to explode!
Maybe taken to the extreme but the standard hawk engines aint got a good rep, now i have peace of mind and once its run in, its getting a gt30r fitted, happy days

I used to run CP pistons in my old 2.5 and with 3 thou clearance they made virtually no more noise than the oem pistons, nice pistons by all acounts

It all depends on what material there made from, 2618 or 4032, if its 4032 you can run tighter piston to bore clearence, most makers have both options available.
CP pistons that i have seen have thinner wall gudgeon pins fitted, don't know if this has changed recently.

you could always go for some forged pistons that have moly coated skirts, this helps reduce piston slap and are harder wearing.

So what is the more "favoured" pistons used when doing a build? Are there some favoured more over others?? Obviously cost is a big factor in most cases but what is the General consensus should we take money out of the equation?

Cheers

i'd say it's more about spec of the pistons rather than make and what type of build you're going for, however i have had good results with Mahle in the past in various marques and all the ones i've used have come with moly skirts as standard.

Am i right in thinking CP make the standard sti pistons?

i've just bought a set of wiseco pistons to use in my s3 build, this will be the first time i've used wiseco so i hope they're descent, the quality of them seems to be ok, de-burring is a bit untidy on them. i have however used better quality ones.
