Default check engine light, engine cutting out?

Ive got a 1998 2000 turbo (impreza), the last couple of days its developed an intermitant fault. When you drive it normal its fine, doesnt miss a beat.
but when i give it the boot the "check engine" light comes on and the engine cuts out then comes back in, it keeps doing it untill you let off the power. Drive it a few miles normal and the light goes off. The engine seems to cut out at around 3000-3500 rpm.
Any idear what this may be?
Thanks Rob.

i had this problem for a while it was stuttering at around them revs and sometimes cutting out check engine light was coming on and off i have just changed the knock sensor and it is running fine now no engine light anymore or stuttering!! do a diagnostic check with the connecters under the steering collum think u have to connect the black ones to each other if not its the green connecters i think .......this is what i did and i got code error 22 from the flashing ECL lite on dash which is the knock sensor give it a go mate if it is get it done asap because the detonation from a knock sensor inside the engine can cause alot of damage......

Model year. Being a 1998 car means it could be either. Does your car have Subaru written on the front brakes?

Regardless - if it was an MY99 UK car, it would have Subaru written on the callipers...... it appears you have an MY98
