I know that there will be no definitive answer to this query but some experienced opinions would be appreciated please.

I am considering buying a 2010 Impreza WRX with the 2.5lt engine, want a low mileage so say 8k-14k miles.
Now just how sound is the engine in these cars as the '2.5 Engine failure' thread is doing a fantastic job of putting me right off ! Car will replace my old Forester that has 135k and never misses a beat ! I want reliability, not something that will go expensively 'bang'. Has the engine in the current Impreza been improved from the first of that line or do I just have to trust to luck/be careful/wary ?

I've yet to hear of a WRX or WRXS hatch that has suffered engine failure.
It seems to be 300 bhp plus when the trouble has a chance of occuring. I had a 270 bhp WRXS ( remapped to accomodate the Prodrive quad exhaust back box) for two years with no problems.

wrx & wrx-s are spot on mate. Never had a spot of bother with any of them to be honest. just make sure the oil supply pipe to the turbo has had the little support bracket fitted to it otherwise they crack without the support.
