Well I completely annihilated my pal on Sunday in his E46 M3 SMG. And when I say annihilated I mean at all speeds, in every gear and with my boost pegged back.
I would think a classic with 330 should see off an M3 but don't expect to leave him for dust. The M3 would start to gain on you as speeds increased and when your car topped out at 145 the M3 would sail past.

I'd say with your power it is achievable.
My mate had the lighter E36 M3 Evo and was running 331bhp and did the 1/4 in 13.8. So doubt your mates 1/4 time to be honest.
Anyway we all know straight line racing is for pussies, take him a run around a back road and show him what its all about.

General rule of thumb is a good well serviced car will run happily at circa 330.
As long as its a cared for car that's been mapped well then I can't see an issue at figures approaching 330.

Given it's mapped on a syvecs I'd say the power delivery would be very good and the fact he has a good suspension setup along with monster brakes, you would need around the same power to see him off as he has the advantage every where else

I had a play with an E46 M3 the other month in my V3 STi (private road of course).
Was a rolling from 50ish up to around 130ish. Was awkward as he started a few car lengths in front of me and got the jump off roundabout before me. I initially gained on a him a tad still, but then it evened out. Mine is around 320ish....
Confident I would have nailed it if went together and same time from 1st or 2nd gear - but the M3 is always going to be stronger at higher speeds than a Subaru.

Well for starters it needs the proper coloured wheels.................

I found after driving a JDM STI (newage) that the power was very deceiving. The car didn't feel quick at all and didn't give that 'punch in the back' that you get with a classic, however, take a look down at the speedo and you'd be shocked.
I reckon your pal would easily see you off Craigo as much as I hate to say it.

i would be a little worried about pushing your engine, they have a tendancy to go pop, just heard of a friends sti5 just gone pop after a trackday at combe, the day before it was mapped to 310bhp.
as you know craigo the newage motor is a stronger engine.if you have the funds by all means push it a bit,but i would expect you may have to rebuild.
im sure a type r with 350-360 would be more than capable of sticking with the hawk,if not be a little quicker as its so light. but as we all know to get reliability and high power output from a classic is not cheap.
