6 grand, well that's a pretty decent budget.
What are your future plans for the car, are you the sort of chap who will want to modify ?
The STI is a much better all round car IMO, it's a slightly 'harder' car in a few aspects but offers a far greater spec.
Is there any reason why you specified a WRX ?

I'll get shot for this but who cares.....
But an STI chap, you'll be far more entertained with an STI and if it's a weekend car then all the more reason.
6 speed box, better brakes, better interior, better suspension and an engine that is easily tuneable to 350bhp and will run all day long at 400.
Blob STI's can be had for circa 6K now, easy decision in my eyes.
Service history is the most important thing in my opinion. Regular services using the correct oils and filters is what these cars need. Mileage is less important as a car with 80K thats been looked after is a much better bet than one with 40K and sh1te service history.

I wouldn't say it's common, but it can be easy to do if you don't check it over properly as mentioned by Matty, service history etc. My advice is to try and buy from on here as 9 times out of 10 you can check the car/owner out and spend a few hours/days finding all sorts about a car. Also after selling the girlfriends car recently the new owners got an RAC inspection for I think £150 and it was quite worth it in my opinion. It found quite a few little things that I would never of known about which got them their money back as I reduced the price to reflect certain things found.
Just be aware, insurance can vary quite a bit depending on where you live and also between STI and WRX. WRX being the cheaper of the two.

If it's been modified/tuned who did it? I'd steer clear of D.I.Y. tuning.(imo)
talk to your local scooby specialist/club. I've used a local scooby garage to examine a private sale car before now; they examined it for £50 and told me was a well presented, clean, POS (piece Of ****).
Meet at the sellers house. It'll more likely to show if they're a Boy racer/Old boy racer/dealer.
Hope t helps, Scoobys don't go wrong often (if looked after), but when they do... it can cost.

have you looked into insurance quotes yet?
The best value for money scoobys are the bugeye STI's 2001-2002 as they have the least popular look but have all the engine, gearbox, brake, suspension, interior upgrades in comparison to the earlier 'classic' shaped imprezas.
Japanese imports (JDM = japanese domestic market) have the highest spec, but you would want one that was brought into the UK early on in its life with plenty of UK service history.
If you get a WRX you'll wish you got an STI. If you get a UK STI you'll wish you got a JDM STI. If you got a JDM STI you'll wish you got a JDMSTI Spec C
Buying an import will mean doing more homework before you buy as you want to make sure other bits and pieces have been put into place when it was imported.

would you rather have a wrx or an sti thats 3 years older?
you'll be able to get a hawkeye wrx, poss 57 reg. BUT, watch out for the tax bracket. i think it changed on a 55 reg. 55 reg and older are £230 a year, 06 reg and newer are £450 a year
