Default written off cars?

Hi,

just a couple of queries.

do written off cars have to be on Q plates or is that an old myth?

The reason i ask is that the girlfriend (MK5 golf) had a low speed bump into a neighbours car (MY52 MG ZS), which coursed the following damage:
scuffed headlight,
scuffed bumper,
slight bend to the drivers-side wing near the headlight.

we noticed the car has not had the repairs done even though this was 5 months ago so thought that the nieghbour didnt pursue the claim.

girlfriends renewel came and she rang tesco about the quote and she asked if the claim not go through. to which they said the 3rd party car got written off for £1900ish. is this not a bit fraudulant that the above damages would come to £1900. i suppose i should add the neighbours partner works for a car workshop.

thanks

Nope repairs on the car would have been more than 50% the value of the car. spares also arnt so easy to get for these anymore. Id guess your neighbour took value of car and agreed with the insurer he/she would also keep the car. Nothing wrong at all with that and nothing to say the repair has to be done either.

Its not fraudulant at all mate. You will get the market valkue for any car that is written off. So if it is a low mileage in pristine condition you will be paid out the cost to replace that car. Most cars are now written off for labour costs as opposed to the parts themselves. 2 years ago, i was hit by a car that wrote my car off ( not my fault ), i was paid out 1200 quid. I actually bought the car 6 months earlier for 680 quid.

the repair hasnt been done as the scuff marks are still there. just surprised the cost to repair this would be more than the £1900. Suppose having the parnter get some high quotes helped!

what would the buy back cost be if they valued the car at £1900?

MAD- you definately did well out of that car.

Q plates are only fitted if they cant determine the cars year or if its a kit car has to be made up of something like 50% of a road going doner car so some kit cars are Q plate some arnt

To be honest with you mate the damage you mentioned above, Around my neck of the woods will not cost more than £300 to repair and how you mention it above looks like just panel replacing no jigging etc so its a cheap fix tbh.

Im not sure but the insurance charge a certain percentage to buy the car back so if some one could tell you what the percentage it is then you could possibly work it out.

If it was a minor you could have offered to get the car repaired for them rather than having your premium go up

My car was written off after someone's handbrake failed and there car rolled down a bank into it most of the damage was paint and possibly a new bumper.
Insurance company paid out £2500 and offered me the car back for £900.
