Default Tyre size help

Hiya all, I've had 215/45/17s on my car for a while now, as the rears were worn out a mate of mine had two partly worn michelins but they were 225/45/17s, so I got him to fit them for me but have just realised that as they are a tad wider that means the profile will be bigger so effectively I have bigger round tyres on the rear..
I'm not sure how the classic scooby 4x4 system works so I'm just wondering if this is going to bugger a diff or something.
Can anyone advise me please?

Thanks, Steve.

You may get a better more accurate response if you post it in general technical, or pm merlin24

You have not chnaged the profile just the width.

215 = width.
45 = profile.
17 = rim/wheel size.

Handling may be interesting

Not sure about damaging a diff, but it can make some cars, Mg/rover for example, set the ABS in action as it thinks the smaller diameter wheels are slowing down quicker than the others.

He as increased the rolling diameter. 225/45 has a higher aspect ratio than a 215/45.

sorry mate but I reckon you will cause problems with drivetrain as that combination is equivalent to running tyres 4.5 mm difference in tread front to back which is frowned upon though I'm no expert. also means more sidewall flex due to wider tyres on standard width rims. nice idea though.

Yeah that's exactly it. I've stood one of the original 215s next to the 225 and i think it's about an inch taller overall. I'm meant to be going away for the weekend and im a bit concerned now that im going to bugger the car up...

45% of 225 = 101.25. 45% of 215 = 96.75. You have increased the tyre wall height by 4.5mm as said in an above post. Times that by 2 and you have increased the wheel diameter by 9mm approx.

If the 215.s are low on tread and the 225's have good tread, the difference between them will be more.
