Default GC8/B & Closed deck block??

have been looking into the closed deck block route and there is quite a bit of info around about how to identify if you have one,ie hatch markings.

have found a few web pages that have said the jdm a/b cars (earliest ones),came with a cdb?
is this the case or am i well of here?

as the layout of the engines have changed slightly over the years, where is the best place to look to see if i have any hatch markings? underneath/by the alternator?

thanks in advance people.

I had a pic somewhere of the one's on mine. Yes just under the alternator. The 93/94 WRX's were CDB and i believe some special editions did too (22B).

Just above the cam belt covers, which would be under the alternator.

well heres a quick pick of my engine, not a close up,

might sound really dumb here but how easy is it to remove the alternator? just undo the bolts and manouvre it so can release the belt from the pulleys?

Mostly v1 & 2 had CDB but cross hatchings are the only sure way to tell. Alternator takes about 5 or 10 minutes to remove but disconnect your battery first as one of the wires is a live cable.

You don't need to take it off, literally look just underneath the alternator and you should see them, a torch may be required.

Its behind the crank shaft sensor. No need to remove anything.

Not all CDB's had the cross hatchings behind the crank sensor, its a misconception.

the rust isnt that bad, honestly its looks worse than it is,i will be sorting out the little rusty parts anyway.and yup am on the southwest coast and the car has been around this area for 4 years.apart from the rear arch, the underneath is solid.

by the sounds of it then,i should look for some cross hatchings but if i find none, then its an engine apart job to tell?

am pretty sure its the original engine in the car as it was rebuilt not too long ago.

guess il be keeping my fingers crossed lol

and its a wrx import not an sti

The pic below is how I have been told to identify a CDB - The ridges by the starter motor.

As Jay has said we have seen CDB's with no hatchings on them at all but have had the ridges.
