Last week i got stuck on the m40 for about three hours as some plank was driving too fast in the fog and caused an accident. Very annoying.

I do the M40 entire length for or five times a week, fog was really bad one night last week, not suprised at all. If anything suprised there weren't more smashes.

Accident investigation coppers do not rush..everything has to be checked and measured then photographed and then repeated ..when I was working for greater Manchester police recovery I was asked to complete impound paperwork which took about 40 mins to fill and get signed when on scene.

But when on b roads it was just the local plod you didn't really care about paperwork so out with the whinch and connect to anything that's still connected to the car and drag on..happy days

If its a fatality or someone may die it will take them ages. Could be diesel spilled over the road which again takes ages to clear.

Surely if its going to be 6 hours though they could close the other side for a short period, cut through the barriers and let folks turn round. Wouldn't work with these concrete barriers that seem to appear nowdays though.
